In 1859, Anton Rubinstein helped found the Russian Musical Society (RMS) to expand concert life and formal music training in Russia. The RMS would soon sponsor the country’s first conservatory, shaping the institutional background that Russian musical nationalists reacted against.
In 1862, Rubinstein founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, the first major conservatory in Russia. Its European-style curriculum became a symbol of “academic” training that critics like Vladimir Stasov and composers around Mily Balakirev believed could limit a distinct Russian voice.
Also in 1862, Balakirev and Gavriil Lomakin founded the Free Music School in St. Petersburg. It offered no-cost instruction and concerts, and it became closely linked with efforts to promote Russian composers and Russian-themed programming outside conservatory control.
During the early 1860s, a loose circle formed around Balakirev in St. Petersburg, bringing together César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Aleksandr Borodin. The group aimed to build a “national school” by drawing on Russian history, folk music, and new approaches to opera and orchestration.
In 1867, critic Vladimir Stasov used the phrase “Mighty Handful” (often translated as “The Mighty Five”) in a newspaper article, giving the circle a lasting public label. The name helped frame the composers as a shared movement, especially in debates against conservatory-minded musicians and critics.
Cui’s opera William Ratcliff premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1869. Although it did not become a repertory staple, it was the first opera by a member of The Five to reach the professional stage, showing that the group’s ambitions extended beyond songs and orchestral works.
The Stone Guest—a late opera by Aleksandr Dargomyzhsky admired by The Five for its speech-like vocal writing—was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1872. After Dargomyzhsky’s death, César Cui completed a small portion and Rimsky-Korsakov orchestrated the score, illustrating how the nationalist circle supported works it saw as pathbreaking.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s first opera, The Maid of Pskov (Pskovityanka), premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1873. Its historical-Russian subject and vivid choral writing strengthened the case that Russian-language opera on national themes could succeed in major imperial theaters.
Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov received its world premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1874. The opera’s focus on Russian history and on the “people” as a major dramatic force became a landmark for nationalist opera, even as the work faced controversy over its unconventional structure and style.
Tchaikovsky’s The Oprichnik premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1874. Although Tchaikovsky was often presented as more “cosmopolitan” than The Five, this Russian-history opera shows that nationalist themes were spreading through different musical camps, increasing competition over what “Russian opera” should sound like.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1882. Built from folklore and fairy-tale material, it helped establish a major strand of Russian opera: works that blend national myth, choral color, and distinctive orchestration to create a “Russian sound world.”
Mussorgsky died in 1881 leaving Khovanshchina unfinished and largely unorchestrated. The opera premiered in 1886 using an edition by Rimsky-Korsakov, signaling a shift into a “legacy” phase: surviving members and allies increasingly edited, completed, and staged the movement’s most ambitious Russian historical operas.
Borodin’s Prince Igor premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1890, after Borodin’s death in 1887. Rimsky-Korsakov and Aleksandr Glazunov helped edit and complete the score, and its success showed how The Five’s ideals could endure beyond the original group through posthumous collaboration and institutional performance.
In 1896, Rimsky-Korsakov completed an edited and newly orchestrated version of Boris Godunov based on earlier materials, making significant changes in harmony, orchestration, and structure. This reflected a key outcome of the period: nationalist operas entered mainstream theaters partly through revisions that made them more compatible with late-19th-century performance expectations.
In 1908, Rimsky-Korsakov produced a further revision of Boris Godunov, restoring and re-orchestrating passages omitted from his 1896 version. By this point, the central operas associated with The Five had become part of a continuing performance tradition—often mediated by editors—marking the long-term legacy of 19th-century Russian nationalist opera.
Russian Nationalist Composers (The Five) and 19th-Century Russian Opera (c. 1850–1900)
