In summer 1987, UK DJs including Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold and others visited Ibiza and heard Alfredo at Amnesia, where his eclectic, genre-mixing approach became a model for the emerging Balearic beat ethos (open-format selection, mood shifts, and a hedonistic dancefloor culture).
Shoom opened in Southwark, London in November 1987, with Rampling explicitly drawing inspiration from Ibiza (especially Amnesia). It became an early UK focal point for Balearic/acid-house club culture that fed back into Ibiza’s growing international pull.
By 1988, Alfredo’s role at Amnesia was formalized when he was made artistic director—an indicator of how central his programming had become to the club’s identity during the Balearic beat era.

In the early 1990s, legislation forced major Ibiza clubs such as KU to cover their dancefloors, marking a shift away from the island’s famed open-air superclub format and reshaping how peak-season nights were staged.
José Padilla took up the residency at Café del Mar in 1991, helping define the sunset "chill-out" complement to Ibiza’s night-time clubbing—an important part of the island’s daily rhythm and musical identity in the early 1990s.
The first Café del Mar compilation was released in 1993, packaging Ibiza’s ambient/chill-out soundtrack for international listeners and reinforcing the island’s association with both afterhours calm and clubland excess.
Manumission began as a mixed gay event at Club Equinox in Manchester in January 1994. Its popularity and notoriety set the stage for its relocation to Ibiza later the same year, where it became emblematic of the island’s theatrical, permissive 1990s club culture.
Later in 1994, Manumission moved to Ibiza and was hosted at KU, aligning a flamboyant UK party brand with one of Ibiza’s most famous superclub spaces—an early sign of the 1990s shift toward large-scale, concept-driven nights.
In 1995, KU changed its name to Privilege following a change of ownership. The rebrand marked a new chapter for the venue as Ibiza’s club industry professionalized and scaled up through the mid-1990s.
