Pierre Schaeffer helped found the Studio d’Essai within French radio during World War II. The studio became a place to test new “radiophonic” (radio-based) production methods, including recording, editing, and sound effects. This institutional base later made his musique concrète experiments possible.
After the war, the Studio d’Essai was renamed the Club d’Essai within Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (RTF). The renamed unit supported experimental broadcasting and gave Schaeffer continued access to professional sound equipment and airtime. This shift helped move the work from wartime radio practice toward organized sonic research.
In 1948, Schaeffer formally launched a program of experiments focused on recorded everyday sounds—“noises” as raw material. Instead of writing notes for performers, he explored how recordings could be cut, repeated, reversed, and re-timed. This approach became central to what he would call musique concrète.
In 1948, Schaeffer created Cinq études de bruits (“Five Studies of Noises”), including the well-known Étude aux chemins de fer built from train recordings. These pieces demonstrated practical techniques such as splicing, looping, and changing playback speed on discs. They helped define musique concrète as composition with recorded sound objects.
On 5 October 1948, Schaeffer presented a radio concert titled Concert de bruits (“concert of noises”). It premiered material that treated recorded sound as the main substance of composition rather than as background effects. This broadcast is widely cited as a public starting point for musique concrète.
Between 1949 and 1950, Schaeffer collaborated with composer Pierre Henry on Symphonie pour un homme seul. The work expanded musique concrète beyond short studies into a larger, multi-part form using human, bodily, and everyday sounds. Their partnership also helped establish a shared working method between composer and studio technician.
On 18 March 1950, Symphonie pour un homme seul was premiered in concert in Paris (École normale de musique). Presenting a piece with no onstage performers, assembled from recorded and manipulated sounds, challenged standard ideas of musical “performance.” The event is often described as a landmark early concert of musique concrète.
In 1951, the Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète (GRMC) was established at RTF, giving Schaeffer’s approach an official institutional home. The GRMC is often described as an early purpose-built electroacoustic studio, supporting both research and production. This step helped shift musique concrète from personal experiment to a recognized practice within broadcast media.
In 1952, Schaeffer published À la recherche d’une musique concrète (“In Search of a Concrete Music”). The book documented his early experiments and argued for listening-based categories of sound rather than traditional notation alone. It helped spread the ideas behind musique concrète to readers beyond the studio and the radio audience.
In 1953, Schaeffer and Henry’s Orphée 53 (often described as a “concrete opera”) was created at the Donaueschingen Festival in Germany. The work showed how musique concrète techniques could support staged or dramatic forms, not only abstract studies. It also signaled the genre’s growing international presence in postwar new-music circles.
In 1958, Schaeffer founded the Groupe de recherches musicales (GRM), reorganizing and extending earlier studio work. The GRM became a long-running center for research, production, and archiving in electroacoustic music. This reorganization marked a move from the early “birth” period toward a more systematic program of sound studies and training.
On 30 June 1959, Schaeffer’s Étude aux objets premiered in Paris (Salle Gaveau). The piece treated “sound objects” as units that could be developed and varied, similar to themes in classical composition, but built from recorded material. It illustrated how musique concrète was becoming both a musical style and a research method for understanding listening.
In 1966, Schaeffer published Traité des objets musicaux (“Treatise on Musical Objects”), a major synthesis of his research. It developed the concept of the objet sonore (sound object), meaning a sound considered through focused listening rather than by its source or meaning. The treatise helped set an intellectual foundation that later electroacoustic and acousmatic composers would build on.
