By the late 1980s, affordable samplers and MIDI sequencing made it possible to build songs from recorded fragments of older music. Producers could capture a drum hit or short phrase (“a sample”), then trigger it rhythmically to create new tracks. This set the stage for both hip-hop and electronic dance music to lean heavily on sample-based production.
In 1988, Akai and drum-machine designer Roger Linn released the MPC60, combining sampling with a built-in MIDI sequencer and 16 performance pads. This “all-in-one” workflow let producers record, chop, and sequence sounds quickly without a full studio setup. The design helped turn sampling into a hands-on, instrument-like practice.
Akai’s S1000 (released in 1988) offered 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo sampling aimed at professional studios. While it was not an MPC, it mattered to this era because it raised expectations for clean sampling and editing, and it became widely used through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Producers could choose between gritty, characterful sampling or higher-fidelity capture depending on the gear and aesthetic.
The MPC60 paired 12-bit sampling with a tight 96-PPQ (parts per quarter note) sequencer and performance features like quantization and swing. Together, these features encouraged a loop-based, pattern-building method that fit hip-hop’s drum programming and electronic music’s repetitive structures. The machine’s limits (memory and sampling time) also pushed producers to edit and arrange samples efficiently.
Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (released June 28, 1988) became a landmark for layered, high-density sampling. The Bomb Squad’s approach treated short clips, noise, and music fragments as building blocks for a new kind of collage-like production. This showed how sampling could drive the identity of a record, not just decorate it.
De La Soul’s debut 3 Feet High and Rising (released February 6, 1989) used a wide mix of sources—funk, rock, doo-wop, and more—alongside skits and unconventional structures. The album helped normalize sampling as a creative way to build new meanings from familiar sounds. It also helped broaden what hip-hop production could sound like beyond harder, drum-forward styles.
In 1991, Akai released the MPC60 II, a revised version of the original MPC60. The update continued the core idea of pad-based sampling and sequencing as a single production center. This helped keep the MPC workflow central as sampling practices spread further in hip-hop and electronic music.
The Future Sound of London released “Papua New Guinea” in November 1991, a key early example of sample-based production shaping electronic dance music. The track’s recognizable borrowed fragments and looping structure show sampling’s role outside hip-hop, especially in UK rave and “ambient house” scenes. It demonstrated that the same techniques could create mood and atmosphere, not just beats.
On December 17, 1991, Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. ruled that sampling without permission could constitute copyright infringement. The decision accelerated the move toward formal sample clearance (getting legal permission) and changed how labels and producers handled recognizable borrowed material. Over time, this raised costs and influenced what kinds of samples were practical to use.
The Prodigy’s Experience (released September 28, 1992) helped define early-1990s breakbeat hardcore and rave album production. The record’s approach—building tracks from breaks, stabs, and borrowed bits—shows sampling as a core composing method in electronic music, not just a studio trick. This paralleled hip-hop’s loop-based construction, even as the scenes had different audiences and venues.
The Prodigy released “Out of Space” on November 9, 1992, built around prominent samples including Max Romeo’s “Chase the Devil.” The track illustrates how breakbeat-driven rave borrowed sampling habits from hip-hop—lifting hooks and vocal phrases to create crowd-ready anthems. It also reflects a period when recognizable samples were still widely used in dance music releases.
In 1994, Akai released the MPC3000, continuing the MPC concept while updating capabilities for the mid-1990s studio environment. This model is widely associated with a more advanced MPC workflow as hip-hop and electronic production became more professionalized and legally constrained by clearance expectations. The MPC3000 helped close the 1988–1995 chapter by showing how sampling tools matured while remaining performance-centered.
