Eric B. & Rakim released Paid in Full, an album that helped define late-1980s New York rap with cleaner drum programming, prominent breaks, and Rakim’s more complex rhyme style. Its sound and approach became a key reference point for producers building what listeners later called boom bap.

KRS-One released Return of the Boom Bap, a high-profile album that put the term “boom bap” in the title and centered the style’s core elements: hard drums, DJ-driven textures, and street-level lyricism. With production from DJ Premier and others, it helped solidify boom bap as a recognized sound rather than just a drum pattern.
Nas released Illmatic, built by a team of leading producers (including DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, and Q-Tip) who brought different versions of the same drum-forward, sample-based approach. The album became a widely cited benchmark for boom bap craft—tight drums, carefully chosen loops, and vivid street storytelling—marking a clear end-point for the 1987–1994 development arc.
The Notorious B.I.G. released Ready to Die, recorded partly at D&D Studios and featuring production from several New York-oriented producers including DJ Premier and Easy Mo Bee.
