In 1990, Sean Combs started working at Uptown Records as an intern and quickly moved into artist development and A&R (artists and repertoire), the role that scouts and shapes recordings. Father MC’s Father’s Day was released in 1990 on Uptown/MCA, with Andre Harrell and Sean Combs credited as executive producers. It captured the label’s growing comfort with hybrid “rap + R&B” formats.
Jodeci released Forever My Lady in 1991 on Uptown/MCA. The album helped modernize mainstream R&B with stronger hip-hop drum programming and a tougher vocal attitude than much late-1980s “quiet storm” R&B. Its success made Jodeci a centerpiece of Uptown’s crossover strategy.
On June 11, 1992, MCA announced a seven-year deal with Andre Harrell tied to Uptown Records and expanded media projects. Mary J. Blige released her debut album What’s the 411? on July 28, 1992 via Uptown/MCA. Mary J. Blige’s What’s the 411? Remix was released on December 7, 1993 by Uptown/MCA.
