Mamie Smith recorded "Crazy Blues" in New York for Okeh, backed by musicians billed as her "Jazz Hounds." The record’s success revealed a large market for recordings by Black performers marketed to Black consumers, pushing companies to create dedicated product lines. This moment is widely treated as a turning point leading to the “race records” boom.
Black Swan Records was founded by Harry Pace as a Black-owned company aiming to record and sell music by Black artists with greater control over production and business terms. It became a prominent early alternative to white-owned labels in the race-record market, even as it faced intense competition and limited access to distribution. Its short life still showed that African Americans could build record-industry institutions, not only perform for them.
By the early 1920s, record companies began explicitly advertising “race records,” a category aimed at Black buyers and typically issued in separate numbered series. Okeh is widely cited as the first major label to use the term in advertising, helping formalize a segregated marketing system for blues, jazz, and related music. This label-driven categorization shaped which artists were recorded, how they were promoted, and where records were sold.
As competition intensified, Paramount organized its Black-artist releases into a special numbered line, often identified as the 12000 series. Numbered series made it easier for distributors and retailers to stock and promote records aimed at Black consumers, reinforcing the industry’s segmented approach. This step signaled that race records were no longer an experiment but a structured business strategy.
Bessie Smith recorded "Down Hearted Blues" in New York with Clarence Williams at the piano. The record became a major seller and helped expand the commercial reach of classic blues and related jazz accompaniment within the race-record market. Its success also encouraged major labels to sign more Black women singers and supporting musicians.
Black Swan’s catalog was ultimately sold to Paramount, reflecting the financial pressures that small labels faced in a market dominated by larger, better-capitalized firms. The sale reduced the presence of Black ownership in the early race-record business, even as Black artists remained central to the music being recorded. Consolidation like this helped major labels control more of the profits from Black music.
Columbia began regular use of the Western Electric electrical recording system, replacing the older acoustic horn method. Electrical recording used microphones and amplification, producing a clearer, fuller sound and capturing instruments (like drums and bass) more effectively. This technology shift changed how jazz records sounded and how studios organized ensembles for recording.
After keeping the new method quiet to help dealers sell older stock, Victor publicly announced its electrical recording technology and promoted new equipment and records. The electrical era raised audience expectations for audio quality and increased the competitive pressure on all labels. For jazz, improved recording fidelity supported more complex arrangements and stronger rhythm-section presence on discs.
Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five recorded their first sides for Okeh in Chicago. These studio-focused records helped shift jazz’s recorded style toward spotlighted solo improvisation, not only group ensemble playing. They also show how race-record labels documented major artistic change even while marketing remained segregated.
Radio Corporation of America (RCA) acquired Victor, linking a leading record company to a major radio-and-technology firm. This mattered because radio, recording technology, and record distribution were becoming more connected, especially as the industry faced economic instability. The deal also signaled increasing corporate consolidation in American recorded music.
By 1932, the U.S. recording industry hit a severe low during the Great Depression, with sales collapsing compared to the late 1920s. The downturn reduced recording opportunities and pushed labels to cut costs, drop artists, and consolidate. This economic shock helps mark the end of the 1917–1932 race-record boom’s first phase, setting the stage for later changes in jazz recording and marketing.
