Cornetist Charles “Buddy” Bolden formed his own group in 1895 and became one of the most famous early New Orleans bandleaders. His loud, dance-driven style is often linked to the emergence of early jazz performance practices. Bolden’s popularity shows that, even before jazz was recorded, New Orleans audiences supported a lively local music scene that overlapped with nightlife districts like Storyville.
In early 1897, New Orleans passed a city ordinance to confine prostitution to a designated area near Basin Street. The district soon became known as “Storyville,” after alderman Sidney Story, and it concentrated saloons, dance halls, and brothels in one place. This legal framework helped create steady demand for live music in and around the district.
The ordinance was passed in January 1897 and was slated to go into effect later that year (commonly described as October). In practice, prostitution and entertainment activity clustered in the designated blocks as the city tried to enforce boundaries and reduce street solicitation elsewhere. The result was an entertainment corridor where musicians could more regularly find paid work.
Publishers produced “Blue Books” that listed Storyville venues and advertised businesses, helping market the district’s nightlife to visitors. These guidebooks reflected how entertainment and vice were organized and promoted in the district. The steady flow of tourists and customers increased opportunities for working musicians in nearby saloons and dance halls.
Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans. He later became a defining figure in jazz, and accounts of his youth place him in and around the city’s working-class neighborhoods near Storyville-era nightlife. His early environment helps explain how young musicians could be shaped by the sounds of parades, dance music, and street life around the district.
Pianist and composer Jelly Roll Morton (born in 1890) became known for playing in Storyville-era venues and for bringing arranged structure to a music rooted in improvisation. His later accounts are sometimes exaggerated, but multiple sources agree he worked in the district’s entertainment world as a young musician. Morton’s career illustrates how Storyville’s nightlife could provide paid settings for developing early jazz piano styles.
In 1906, Buddy Bolden collapsed while performing, and his career quickly ended. His decline marked the fading of one of the best-known early New Orleans cornet styles associated with the city’s turn-of-the-century dance culture. As musicians and audiences changed, the broader early-jazz scene continued to evolve in venues tied to nightlife and tourism.
Trombonist and bandleader Kid Ory moved his six-piece band to New Orleans in 1910. Ory’s group became an important employer and training ground for musicians in the 1910s, helping standardize the small-band New Orleans style (front line horns over rhythm). This reflects how the city’s performance economy—including areas near Storyville—supported professional bands.
In 1915, Morton published “Jelly Roll Blues,” often cited as one of the first published jazz compositions. Publication mattered because it moved parts of this local, performance-based music into sheet music and the wider commercial market. It also shows that Storyville-era players were starting to connect New Orleans styles to national music business channels.
On February 26, 1917, the Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded “Livery Stable Blues” in New York, and it was commercially released on March 7, 1917. This recording is widely described as the first commercially issued jazz record, helping spread a New Orleans-derived style beyond the city. It also shows a major shift: jazz moved from local venues—including Storyville-adjacent nightlife—to mass media and national audiences.
After the United States entered World War I, federal officials pushed to eliminate prostitution near military facilities and training areas. In New Orleans, this pressure directly affected Storyville because it was a legally recognized red-light district near a major port and military activity. The policy shift shows how national wartime priorities could override local tolerance for regulated vice.
Under pressure linked to U.S. Navy policy, Mayor Martin Behrman ordered Storyville shut down, and it officially closed on November 12, 1917. The closure ended the district’s legal status and disrupted a concentrated nightlife economy that had provided frequent employment for musicians. Jazz did not stop, but the center of gravity shifted further toward touring, new venues outside the district, and recordings that circulated nationally.
