The 4-Skins formed in 1979 and became one of the best-known early Oi! bands. Their music and image tied together punk energy, skinhead style, and everyday “street” themes, helping define what many listeners thought Oi! sounded like.
The Business formed in 1979 in Lewisham and soon became closely identified with the Oi! scene. The band’s rise reflects how Oi! developed into a network of local groups, independent labels, and all-ages gigs beyond the first wave of 1976–1978 punk.
In August 1979, Sounds writer Garry Bushell began spotlighting a more street-level, working-class strand of UK punk he called “new punk.” This coverage helped connect bands, fans, and venues into a recognizable scene that would soon be labeled Oi!.
Cockney Rejects released the song “Oi! Oi! Oi!” on their album Greatest Hits Vol. II in 1980. The track’s shout-along hook helped popularize the word “Oi!” as a scene marker, reinforcing a shared identity around this style of punk.
Oi! The Album was released on 27 October 1980, bringing multiple bands under the Oi! label on a major release. Compilations like this made it easier for the press and record buyers to treat Oi! as a distinct movement rather than scattered local punk acts.
In 1981, The Oppressed formed in Cardiff, showing Oi! was not only a London scene. The band became known for openly opposing racism and fascism, highlighting that Oi! identity was contested—some participants worked to separate the music from far-right politics and stereotypes.
In May 1981, Strength Thru Oi! followed the first compilation and helped expand the scene’s audience. The title later became a major controversy because it echoed a well-known Nazi slogan, even though the album itself featured a range of bands rather than a single political line.
On 3 July 1981, street fighting erupted in Southall, West London, involving “skinhead” youths and local Asian residents, and the Hambrough Tavern was set on fire. Media coverage connected the violence to Oi! and skinhead culture, accelerating public and industry pressure on venues, bands, and record sellers.
Carry On Oi! was released in 1981 as the next major Oi! compilation after Southall. Its existence shows the scene continued, but increasingly under controversy and scrutiny, with promoters and labels balancing demand against reputational risk.
Released in 1982, Oi! Oi! That’s Yer Lot! (Oi/4) documented a wider set of bands and regional sounds. By this point, the movement’s music continued to develop even as its public image remained shaped by earlier controversies and by clashes over politics inside the broader skinhead and punk worlds.
Cock Sparrer’s Shock Troops was widely distributed in 1983 and became a key reference point for later street punk and Oi! bands. Its success showed how the best-known Oi!-adjacent music could outlast the early 1981 backlash by leaning into strong songwriting and singalong choruses.
In 1984, Infa-Riot changed their name to “The Infas,” reflecting how stigma around Oi! could affect bands’ opportunities. This kind of rebranding illustrates a broader shift: by the mid-1980s, many groups adapted their presentation or moved toward related styles (street punk and early hardcore) as the original Oi! “moment” faded.
By 1986, the early-1980s British Oi! surge had largely broken apart into smaller scenes, reunions, and international offshoots. The 1979–1986 period is often treated as Oi!’s defining British phase: it set the sound, the imagery, and the long-running debates about class, violence, and political labeling that followed the genre afterward.
