In 1766, English antiquary Richard Chandler visited Olympia during a Society of Dilettanti-sponsored tour of Greece and Asia Minor. His travel accounts helped reintroduce the site to European scholars and set the stage for later, more systematic archaeological work.
In May 1829, the French Scientific Expedition to the Morea carried out early excavations at Olympia, including work around the Temple of Zeus. This mission is often treated as the first organized excavation phase at the sanctuary, moving beyond traveler reports toward documented fieldwork.
During the 1829 work, French excavators discovered metope sculptures from the Temple of Zeus (metopes are square relief panels on a Doric temple). With Greek authorization at the time, several metopes were transferred to the Louvre, shaping later debates about removal versus on-site preservation.
In 1874, an agreement was concluded that granted the German Archaeological Institute exclusive excavation rights at Olympia, with a key condition that discoveries would remain in Greece. This helped establish a more modern model of excavation tied to documentation, conservation, and local display.
Systematic excavations began in 1875 under Ernst Curtius and the German Archaeological Institute, clearing major areas of the sanctuary. The work produced extensive records and a large number of finds, and it strongly influenced how later classical archaeology projects were organized.
In 1875, excavators uncovered the marble Nike of Paionios, a major Classical sculpture of the goddess Victory. The discovery became one of the signature finds from the German campaign and remains central to how Olympia’s sculptural landscape is interpreted and displayed.
On May 8, 1877, German excavators uncovered the famous statue known as Hermes and the Infant Dionysus in the Temple of Hera. Its unusually good preservation made it a key reference point for studying Greek sculpture and raised the profile of Olympia’s excavation program.
By 1888, the first purpose-built museum at Olympia opened to house major finds from the sanctuary. Locating the collection near the excavation site supported study and public access while reinforcing the 1874 principle that excavated objects would remain in Greece.
From about 1890 into the 1890s, the German-led Olympia project was synthesized in the multi-volume publication commonly known as Olympia: Die Ergebnisse…. These reports helped set standards for archaeological reporting by combining architecture, sculpture, small finds, and inscriptions into a coordinated research record.
Between 1908 and 1929, Wilhelm Dörpfeld led more limited excavations that extended knowledge of the sanctuary beyond the main 1875–1881 clearance. This period reflects a shift from one intensive clearing campaign to intermittent research focused on specific structures and questions.
A new systematic phase began in 1936, linked to international attention around the Berlin Olympic Games. Work under Emil Kunze and Hans Schleif focused on areas south of the stadium, including the South Stoa and bath and gymnasium zones, broadening the site’s excavated footprint.
From 1952 into the 1960s, Kunze continued excavations with architect Alfred Mallwitz, including work at Pheidias’ workshop and the Leonidaion, and investigations around the stadium. This period also emphasized recording and managing large volumes of small finds, showing the growing scale of archaeological documentation.
In 1989, UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Site of Olympia as a World Heritage property. This recognition strengthened international expectations for long-term conservation, careful site management, and protection from natural and human-caused threats.
On August 26, 2007, major wildfires in Greece reached the area around Olympia, and the museum was evacuated as a precaution. Officials reported that the main ruins and museum collections were spared from serious damage, highlighting the ongoing need for emergency planning at archaeological sites.
In February 2012, armed robbers stole dozens of artifacts from a museum at Olympia, exposing security vulnerabilities during Greece’s financial crisis. In November 2012, police recovered the objects through a sting operation, underscoring the continuing risk of theft even at globally known heritage sites.
In February 2021, heavy rains shifted soil at Olympia, and in March the Greek Culture Ministry announced the discovery of an intact small bronze bull figurine near the Temple of Zeus area. The find, dated in initial reports to the Geometric period, shows how erosion and weather events can both threaten the site and unexpectedly expose buried material.
