The 1996 British Columbia race marked a shift into bigger-budget, multi-episode coverage on Discovery Channel. This change increased the series’ visibility and helped define Eco-Challenge as both a race and a televised documentary-style event. The 1998 race in Morocco ran from the Atlantic coast inland through mountain and desert terrain, using a mix of disciplines such as trekking, paddling, and mountain biking. Team Vail, captained by Billy Mattison, won—commonly noted as the first American team to win Eco-Challenge. The win signaled that U.S.-based teams could compete with the established leaders from New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.
The 1999 event in Patagonia (based around Argentina’s lake and mountain region) pushed teams through cold-water paddling and high-mountain travel, including a course change during the race. MountainZone reported that Team Greenpeace won in just over five days, emphasizing how fast elite teams could move through extreme terrain. The Patagonia edition also reinforced the series’ identity around remote landscapes and environmental themes.

In 2000, the race in Sabah, Borneo added challenging jungle and water sections and drew attention to the health risks of racing in tropical environments. A CDC-linked investigation described by Scientific American reported that a significant portion of participants later developed leptospirosis, a bacterial illness often associated with exposure to contaminated water. This episode showed that expedition racing risk was not only about injuries and weather, but also infectious disease.
The 2001 race in New Zealand produced one of the closest top finishes recorded in MountainZone’s official standings. Team Salomon/Eco-Internet won in 4 days, 5 hours, 34 minutes, with Team PureNZ.com finishing 21 minutes later. The narrow margin illustrated how competitive the field had become by the early 2000s.
Before the 2002 Fiji race, reporting noted that organizer Mark Burnett wanted to move away from overly guided, instruction-heavy routing and back toward freer expedition navigation. The approach aimed to restore the race’s identity as a test of route choice and self-reliance, not just athletic execution. This goal shaped how Fiji 2002 was described and promoted.
The 2002 Eco-Challenge started on Fiji’s main island (Viti Levu) with a large international field and immediate problem-solving tasks, including building traditional-style rafts early in the race. MountainZone’s day-one coverage framed the race as a major logistical and navigation challenge in jungle and river terrain. Fiji 2002 became the final event of the original annual Eco-Challenge series run by Mark Burnett.
