American pilot Kirby Chambliss won the 2004 season title after a three-race schedule across the UK, Hungary, and the United States. A U.S. champion helped the series gain traction with American audiences and event hosts. The result also reinforced that the sport’s outcome depended on clean, accurate flying rather than raw power alone.
In 2005 the competition expanded to seven race locations, reflecting rapid growth in host-city demand and logistical capacity. The wider tour made it easier to market the series as a true international championship. It also increased the importance of season-long consistency because more races meant more chances for mistakes or mechanical issues to affect standings.
American pilot Mike Mangold clinched the 2005 championship at the season finale over San Francisco Bay. His strong results across the year showed how important repeatable precision was across multiple courses and weather conditions. The San Francisco event also demonstrated the series’ appeal as a city-front spectacle, often staged over water near urban landmarks.
Britain’s Paul Bonhomme won the 2010 championship, his second straight title. After the 2010 season, organizers announced a break to reorganize and strengthen the series, reflecting concerns about keeping the sport safe and sustainable as performance limits increased. This pause became a major turning point before the Air Race returned with redesigned rules and equipment standards.
After several years without races, Red Bull announced the championship would return in 2014. The comeback was tied to changes intended to improve safety and standardize key equipment, including moves toward more uniform engines and propellers. These updates aimed to reduce risk and keep competition closer by limiting major performance advantages.
In the first season back, British pilot Nigel Lamb won the 2014 world title. His championship was built on consistent finishes across the season rather than relying on a single dominant stretch. The outcome suggested the post-hiatus rules created a tighter, more strategic season-long fight for points.
Paul Bonhomme secured his third career championship at the 2015 season finale in Las Vegas, finishing second in the final race to lock up the overall points lead. The close finish highlighted how small time penalties and tiny timing gaps could decide a season. By this point, the modern “Master Class” era was defined by sustained consistency under pressure.
German pilot Matthias Dolderer clinched the 2016 world championship at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, before the season ended. His early lock on the title showed how a strong streak across multiple rounds could create an insurmountable points gap. The win also made him the first German Red Bull Air Race world champion.
Japan’s Yoshihide Muroya won the 2017 championship after a decisive performance at Indianapolis. His title was widely noted as the first Red Bull Air Race world championship won by a pilot from Asia. The result underlined the series’ international reach in its later years, with top contenders emerging from a broader set of countries.
Czech pilot Martin Šonka won his first world championship in 2018, with the title decided at the final round at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. The season-ending showdown showed how the knockout race format and time penalties could quickly swing the standings. Šonka’s championship added another new nation to the series’ list of title winners.
In May 2019, Red Bull announced it would discontinue the Air Race World Championship after the 2019 season. The decision meant planned events were removed from the lineup and made the 2019 races a final farewell tour for teams, host cities, and fans. This announcement clearly set an endpoint for the series as it existed from 2003 onward.
At the final event in Chiba, Japan, Australian pilot Matt Hall became the 2019 world champion, the last title awarded before the series ended. With the championship closing, the result became a defining part of the Air Race’s legacy, marking who finished on top in the final standings. The Chiba finale served as the sport’s closing chapter under the Red Bull Air Race World Championship banner.
