In mid-1998, leading Japanese flatland riders organized King of Ground (KOG) to create a rider-run contest series and raise flatland BMX’s public profile. The first KOG contest was held in Asakusa, Tokyo, helping establish a regular competitive pathway in Japan for the years that followed.
As KOG continued, it drew increasingly large fields and began attracting riders from outside Japan. This shift mattered because it turned a domestic series into an international meeting point, giving Japanese riders regular high-level comparison without leaving the country.
KOG promoted flatland not only as a judged contest but also as a broader form of expression, with events incorporating music and visual art. This approach helped define the scene’s identity in Japan and supported flatland’s growth beyond a niche bicycle discipline.
By the mid-2000s, large flatland events and media coverage helped connect local scenes worldwide, including Japan’s. This period also reflected a broader trend: flatland riders increasingly built their own platforms and brands as the discipline separated culturally from other BMX formats.
In 2007, KOG was used as a round of the newly created BMX Flatland World Circuit, a multi-event series produced by Yasuyuki Takeo (Green-G). This was a turning point because it connected a key Japanese contest directly to a season-long international points system.
In the World Circuit’s first season, the Japan-based KOG round was won by Yoshiki Uchino, with other Japanese riders filling many top places. The result showed that Japan’s flatland scene had depth, not just a few standout names.
At the end of the 2007 BMX Flatland World Circuit season, Hiroya Morizaki was listed as the overall champion. This mattered for Japan’s scene because it signaled that riders based in Japan were shaping the results of a global series, not only local contests.
In October 2008, Tokyo hosted a KOG round that drew a strong international field, with results led by Matthias Dandois and several Japanese finalists. Holding a high-profile round in Japan helped make Tokyo a regular stop on the flatland competition calendar.
In 2009, KOG in Japan continued as a World Circuit scoring event, drawing top international riders. Continued inclusion reinforced Japan’s role as a key organizing hub, not just a participant, in pro flatland’s competition system.
At the 2009 KOG round (counting for the World Circuit), Shinichi Kiba finished second behind Matthias Dandois, with Yohei Uchino close behind in third. These placements illustrated the scene’s competitive maturity: Japanese riders were consistently fighting for podiums in international-format events held at home.
In 2010, a Japan-based round of the BMX Flatland World Circuit—listed as “Kind of Ground”—was part of the season’s scoring events. Keeping a World Circuit round in Japan helped sustain the country’s central role in the pro flatland schedule through the end of the decade.
Results for the 2010 Japan-based World Circuit round list Moto Sasaki in first place, ahead of Viki Gómez and other top international riders. This outcome provided a clear closing note for 1990–2010: Japanese contests remained globally significant, and Japanese riders were winning at the highest levels on home ground.
