In 1986, Mat Hoffman entered major AFA freestyle competitions as an unsponsored teenage rider and won the 14–15 expert ramp class. These early victories made him widely noticed for going higher than most riders and helped launch his path into BMX vert (vertical ramp) progression.
On March 25, 1989, Hoffman landed a 900 (two-and-a-half rotations) during the 2-Hip King of Vert contest in Kitchener, Ontario. The trick showed how far BMX vert could be pushed at a time when most riders were still exploring smaller spins and airs.
The BMX video Head First (edited/filmed by Eddie Roman) documented Hoffman’s high-risk vert riding and helped his tricks and approach reach riders who could not see him in person. This kind of widely shared video part became a key way BMX vert influence spread in the 1990s.
In late 1991, Hoffman began designing the Condor—his signature frame—motivated by repeated equipment failures while riding vert. The goal was a stronger, purpose-built bike that could handle bigger airs and harder landings, supporting the next phase of vert progression.

In 1995, ESPN’s first X Games included BMX Vert, and Hoffman won gold. This helped bring vert BMX to a much larger television audience and made Hoffman’s style a central reference point for the sport’s mainstream era.
In 1996, Hoffman won BMX Vert gold again at X Games II. Back-to-back wins strengthened his influence during a period when competition results and TV exposure heavily shaped which tricks and riding styles became the standard in vert.
In 1999, Hoffman’s organization developed the Crazy Freakin’ Bikers (CFB) Series to provide structured events for both amateur and pro BMX freestyle riders. The series supported the sport’s growth by adding more competition opportunities beyond the X Games spotlight.
On March 20, 2001, Hoffman reached 8.07 m (26 ft 6 in) of vertical air from a 24-foot quarterpipe in Oklahoma City, a mark recognized by Guinness World Records (noting he was towed by a motorcycle for speed). The record symbolized how Hoffman pushed BMX vert into big-air territory, beyond typical contest runs.
At X Games VIII in Philadelphia in 2002, Hoffman landed the first no-handed 900 on a BMX vert ramp. The trick combined extreme rotation with a major loss of control points (hands off the bars), and it became one of the defining moments of his late-career competition influence.
In 2002, Hoffman published The Ride of My Life, describing his career, injuries, and the evolution of BMX freestyle. The book helped document vert BMX history from an insider’s perspective and further established his public identity as a central figure in the sport’s development.
Also in 2005, Hoffman was elected president of the International BMX Freestyle Federation, linking his influence to sport organization and governance. This represented a shift from purely personal progression—new tricks and bigger ramps—toward shaping how BMX freestyle was managed and represented more broadly.
In 2005, Oklahoma City opened a public concrete park named the Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park, with Hoffman present for the opening period. The park reflected his legacy shifting from primarily contest wins to long-term community infrastructure that supported BMX (and other action sports) development.
By 2005, Hoffman Promotions had produced competitions for 14 consecutive years, showing sustained involvement in building BMX events beyond his own riding. This long run of production work helped stabilize the competitive ecosystem that supported BMX vert and freestyle through the 1990s and 2000s.
By 2010, Hoffman’s public profile included appearances in major action-entertainment projects like Jackass 3D. While not a BMX contest milestone, it reflects how his vert-riding image and risk-taking approach carried into broader media—an outcome of the influence he built from the late 1980s through the 2000s.
