Jeff Ho, Skip Engblom, and Craig Stecyk opened Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions in Santa Monica. The shop became a hub for local youth around the rough, working-class beachfront area nicknamed “Dogtown.” It also provided a base for forming a sponsored surf-and-skate team.
After the shop opened, the Zephyr crew began recruiting local teenagers to represent them in surf contests. This team identity mattered later because the same riders and “surf style” carried directly into early team skateboarding. The Z-Boys story starts as much with surfing culture as with skateboarding.
The arrival of polyurethane (urethane) skateboard wheels made boards faster and easier to control on rough pavement. With that technology, Zephyr formed a sponsored skate squad—the Zephyr Competition Team, soon known as the Z-Boys. Their skating drew heavily on surfing: low stance, hard carving turns, and a more aggressive look than the contest style of the time.
In April 1975, the Z-Boys entered the Bahne-Cadillac Del Mar Nationals, one of the era’s most prominent contests. Their surf-influenced, raw style contrasted with the more gymnastic, formal freestyle approach then common in competitions. This contest helped push Dogtown skating into wider visibility and accelerated changes in how skateboarding looked and felt.
Photographer and writer Craig Stecyk documented the crew through the influential “Dogtown Chronicles” in Skateboarder magazine. The photos and writing did more than record events—they helped define a new skate identity, linking style, spots, and attitude. Media attention also increased the commercial interest around the team and its riders.
During the mid-1970s drought period, many backyard pools were left empty, creating new curved concrete terrain. Z-Boys and other skaters began riding these bowls and walls, turning pool spaces into early versions of today’s transition features (like ramps and halfpipes). This shift helped move skateboarding beyond flatland tricks toward vertical and “transition” skating.
The original Jeff Ho/Zephyr shop closed in December 1976. By then, the Z-Boys’ approach had already influenced skateboarding beyond Dogtown, and many riders were being noticed by larger companies. The closing marked the end of the team’s original “home base,” even as its style continued to spread.
In early 1977, California’s State Water Board adopted drought-related policies and issued notices during the 1976–1977 drought period. While not aimed at skateboarding, these actions reflected the wider water crisis shaping daily life. The broader drought conditions helped explain why empty pools became unusually common terrain for skaters.
By the late 1970s, the techniques developed in pools—fast carving, wall rides, and early aerial approaches—were reshaping what “good skating” meant. This helped set the foundation for modern transition and vert skateboarding (skating on curved surfaces and near-vertical ramps). Dogtown’s influence became a major reference point in how skateboarding developed next.
Stecyk’s “Dogtown Chronicles” work in Skateboarder is widely described as running through about 1980. Around this time, skateboarding’s late-1970s boom began to cool, and parts of the industry and media shifted direction. The Dogtown story moved from being current news to becoming history with lasting influence.
Stacy Peralta’s documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys brought 1970s Zephyr history to a new audience using archival footage and interviews. It premiered at Sundance and won major festival awards, helping cement Dogtown as a key origin story for modern skateboarding. The film also reframed the era’s local scene as a broader cultural turning point.
The feature film Lords of Dogtown (written by Stacy Peralta) retold the Z-Boys story in a scripted, dramatized form. Its wide theatrical release helped bring Dogtown into mainstream pop culture and introduced the key figures and ideas to viewers who were not already part of skateboarding. By this point, the Z-Boys legacy functioned as both sports history and cultural myth.
