In March 1976, the Carlsbad Skatepark opened in San Diego County, California. As California’s first skatepark, it quickly became a highly visible model for what a modern concrete skatepark could look like and how it could be operated as a business. Its opening helped accelerate skatepark construction during the late 1970s boom.
In the first week of June 1976, Ocean Bowl Skate Park opened in Ocean City, Maryland. Unlike many early parks that were private businesses, Ocean Bowl is widely described as an early municipal skate facility created after local officials sought a controlled place for skating. Its opening showed that cities could respond to skateboarding by building dedicated spaces, not only by banning street skating.
In August 1976, Derby Skatepark was built in Santa Cruz, California. Its early “snake run” style emphasized flowing terrain and carved turns, not just ramps, helping define what many skaters wanted from concrete park design. Derby’s long-term survival also made it a key example of how a well-loved park could become part of local recreation culture.
On April 10, 1977, the World Skateboard Championships were held at Carlsbad Skatepark. Hosting a major competition helped make skateparks central stages for skateboarding, tying park design to organized events and spectatorship. This attention also reinforced the idea that skateparks could drive local business through admissions, contests, and pro-shop sales.
In May 1977, Pipeline Skatepark opened in Upland, California. It became famous for steep “vertical” (near-straight-up) walls and large features, reflecting a shift toward more advanced, high-risk skating during the boom. Its design influenced later skatepark builders and helped push skateboarding toward the more aerial style associated with late-1970s vert riding.
On June 4, 1977, Kona Skatepark opened in Jacksonville, Florida. Its opening illustrates how quickly skateparks spread beyond Southern California into other regions during the boom years. Kona later became known for surviving long after many 1970s parks closed, making it a lasting link to this construction era.
Bro Bowl was built in 1978 at Perry Harvey Sr. Park in Tampa, Florida, and later opened to skaters as a free public facility. It showed that public agencies sometimes built skate terrain even while many parks were run as private businesses. Bro Bowl is now remembered as one of the few surviving examples from the late-1970s wave.
In August 1978, Del Mar Skate Ranch opened in Del Mar, California. By this point, many regions had already built multiple parks, and the pace of new construction was starting to slow as owners faced rising costs and changing demand. Del Mar became influential for the skaters who trained there and for its role as a late entry in the first big wave of U.S. skatepark building.
In 1979, the original Carlsbad Skatepark closed and was later buried under dirt, leaving it intact underground for decades. Its closure reflected a broader turning point: many privately run parks struggled as costs rose and the late-1970s boom cooled. The burial became a powerful symbol of how quickly the first skatepark wave could fade.
By the early 1980s, many skateparks had closed, with liability claims and insurance costs frequently cited as major reasons. A 2000 insurance trade report described the late-1970s/early-1980s period as one in which large numbers of parks were shut down due to liability risk and rising costs. This marked the end of the “build fast” phase and pushed much skateboarding activity back to improvised spots and fewer remaining parks.
By 1985, the first U.S. skatepark boom (1976–1985) had largely ended, with far fewer parks operating than at the peak. Research summaries have cited figures on the order of about 190 skateparks operating nationwide in 1982, illustrating how the boom matured into a smaller set of surviving facilities. The legacy of this era lived on through a handful of durable parks and through design ideas—like bowls, snake runs, and vert—that shaped later public skatepark building in the 1990s and beyond.
