Bușteni, Romania hosted its first UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup stage in February 2006. Adding Eastern European venues helped make the circuit more geographically diverse and built long-term host sites for later finals and record attempts.
In 2007, the UIAA Ice Climbing World Championships were held with events in Saas-Fee, Switzerland and Bușteni, Romania. Using multiple venues showed the sport’s growth and the need to match disciplines to specialized event structures.
The 2009 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup concluded with finals in Bușteni, Romania. The UIAA reported that Pavel Gulyaev set a men’s speed world record during a record attempt, and Maria Tolokonina set the first official women’s speed world record, underscoring the rising visibility of speed climbing on ice.
In 2018, the UIAA announced that Outdoor Research would succeed The North Face Korea as title sponsor of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour, under a multi-year deal. Sponsorship support mattered because it helped stabilize event organization and media coverage across a full season.
The UIAA set Saas-Fee, Switzerland as the final round for the 2020 season, with overall World Tour titles to be decided there after earlier events in China and South Korea. This illustrates how the sport relied on a small number of dependable winter venues to complete a season narrative from early rounds to finals.
After the Saas-Fee finale, the UIAA confirmed the overall 2020 season winners: Louna Ladevant (men’s lead), Anton Nemov (men’s speed), and Maria Tolokonina (women’s lead and speed). These results provide a clear end point for the 2002–2020 period, showing how the World Cup matured into a structured, multi-discipline season with established champions and long-running host venues.
