During the 1990s, many Afghans living as refugees in Pakistan took up cricket in local clubs and camps. This period mattered because it created a first generation of players and organizers who later carried the sport back into Afghanistan.
In 1995, the Afghanistan Cricket Federation was formed to organize teams, competitions, and basic governance. Creating a national body was a key step toward joining regional and international cricket structures.
In 2001, Afghanistan was admitted as an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This recognition helped Afghanistan access a clearer pathway into ICC events and development support.
In 2003, Afghanistan gained associate membership in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). This mattered because ACC events provided more regular competitive matches and a regional stage for Afghanistan’s emerging national team.
Afghanistan won the 2008 ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division Five tournament in Jersey (23–31 May), defeating hosts Jersey in the final. This win was a turning point because it launched Afghanistan’s rapid climb through the WCL divisions toward ODI-level competition.
At the 2009 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in South Africa, Afghanistan won the 5th-place playoff against Scotland on 19 April 2009. As a result, Afghanistan gained official One Day International (ODI) status for the first time, expanding access to higher-level matches and funding opportunities.
On 13 February 2010, Afghanistan’s results in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier secured a place at the 2010 ICC World Twenty20. Reaching a global ICC tournament helped Afghanistan gain visibility, experience, and stronger support for player development.
On 10 February 2012, Afghanistan played Pakistan in a one-off ODI in Sharjah. This mattered because it was Afghanistan’s first ODI against a Test-playing nation, showing that Afghanistan was starting to be treated as a serious international side.
On 29 June 2013, Afghanistan was granted ICC Associate Membership. The upgrade was important because Associate Members typically gain more structured access to ICC events and development resources than Affiliate Members.
On 4 October 2013, Afghanistan qualified for the 2015 Cricket World Cup by beating Kenya and finishing high enough in the World Cricket League Championship standings. This qualification was a major step in Afghanistan’s global sports presence, moving from development tournaments into cricket’s biggest 50-over event.
On 1 March 2014, Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in an Asia Cup match at Fatullah for its first ODI victory over an ICC Full Member. The win showed that Afghanistan could compete beyond Associate-level opponents and accelerated expectations for World Cup and long-format progress.
On 26 February 2015, Afghanistan beat Scotland by one wicket in Dunedin for its first-ever Cricket World Cup match win. This result mattered because it validated Afghanistan’s rise on the world stage and helped build domestic and diaspora support for the team.
On 24 October 2015, Afghanistan won an ODI series against Zimbabwe (3–2) in Bulawayo. It was widely noted as the first time an ICC Associate nation won a bilateral ODI series against a Full Member, showing Afghanistan could sustain success across multiple matches, not just one-off upsets.
On 22 June 2017, the ICC confirmed Afghanistan (and Ireland) as Full Members, making Afghanistan eligible to play Test cricket. This decision marked the official endpoint of Afghanistan’s “rise through the ranks” and opened the door to cricket’s longest and most traditional format at the highest level.
From 14–18 June 2018, Afghanistan played its inaugural Test match against India in Bengaluru. Even in defeat, the match served as a clear milestone: Afghanistan had completed its journey from grassroots growth and refugee-camp origins to participation in cricket’s top-tier format.
