At the Rome 1960 Olympics, marathon runner Abebe Bikila won gold and set a world record while running barefoot. His win gave Ethiopia its first-ever Olympic medal and helped introduce East African distance running to a global audience. It also set a model for Ethiopia’s later success in endurance events.
In 1964, Bikila won the Olympic marathon again in Tokyo, becoming the first athlete to win two Olympic marathons. Back-to-back wins strengthened Ethiopia’s identity in the marathon and showed that the 1960 victory was not a one-time surprise.
At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Mamo Wolde won gold in the men’s marathon. His victory continued Ethiopia’s Olympic marathon tradition after Bikila and kept the country prominent in the longest road race on the Olympic program.
In 1980, Miruts Yifter won gold in the men’s 10,000 meters at the Moscow Olympics. This was a major shift for Ethiopia, showing it could win not only marathons but also track long-distance events inside the stadium.
Five days after his 10,000m title, Yifter won gold in the men’s 5,000 meters at the 1980 Olympics. Winning both major track distance races in one Games was rare and highlighted Ethiopia’s depth beyond the marathon.
At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Derartu Tulu won the women’s 10,000 meters. The victory mattered beyond sport: it made her the first Black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal, and it opened a new era for Ethiopian women in distance running.
In 1996, Haile Gebrselassie won the men’s 10,000 meters at the Atlanta Olympics. His win strengthened Ethiopia’s position in track distance racing during a period of intense rivalry with Kenya and other nations.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Gebrselassie defended his 10,000m title. Consecutive Olympic wins helped define Ethiopia’s modern dominance in the event and created a clear “handoff” moment to the next generation of Ethiopian track stars.
In Athens 2004, Kenenisa Bekele won the men’s 10,000 meters, with Ethiopia taking both gold and silver. The result marked a generational shift, as Bekele’s victory signaled a new leader in Ethiopian long-distance running on the track.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Meseret Defar won the women’s 5,000 meters, and Tirunesh Dibaba took bronze. Ethiopia’s medals in the shorter long-distance track race showed its women’s program was becoming strong across multiple events, not just the 10,000m.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Tirunesh Dibaba became the first woman to win Olympic gold in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the same Games. This double highlighted Ethiopia’s ability to win through both tactics and endurance, and it helped cement the country’s reputation in women’s long-distance racing.
In the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s 10,000m final, Almaz Ayana won gold and set a world record of 29:17.45. The performance showed Ethiopia could still produce breakthrough times in a highly competitive era, linking modern training and talent to a long Olympic tradition.
At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), Selemon Barega won gold in the men’s 10,000 meters. His victory returned Ethiopia to the top of the event after other nations’ successes in 2012 and 2016, showing the country’s long-distance pipeline remained strong into the present era.
