Unlike today’s controlled pools, the 1896 swimming races took place in open water in the Bay of Zea, where cold currents made conditions difficult. These events showed how early Olympic sport often relied on local geography and practical improvisation. They also highlighted the wide variety of sports included in the new Olympic program.
At Athens 1896, first-place finishers received a silver medal (plus an olive branch and diploma), and second-place finishers received a copper/bronze medal (with a laurel branch and diploma).
