Women competed in Olympic gymnastics for the first time at the 1928 Summer Games in Amsterdam. The women’s program was limited to a single team all-around competition, reflecting the era’s cautious approach to women’s events.
The Netherlands won the first Olympic gold medal in women’s gymnastics, ahead of Italy and Great Britain. This first event set an early pattern: women’s Olympic gymnastics initially centered on group-based competition rather than individual champions.
No women’s gymnastics events were held at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The omission interrupted early momentum and showed that women’s participation was still not consistently protected within the Olympic program.
Women’s gymnastics returned to the Olympic program in 1936 with the team all-around in Berlin. The event format combined group exercises with individual compulsory and optional routines that counted toward the team score.
At the 1948 London Games, women again competed only in the team all-around, with no individual all-around or apparatus titles. This was the last Olympics where women’s artistic gymnastics had team medals but no individual Olympic champions.
The 1952 Helsinki Olympics expanded women’s artistic gymnastics to include an individual all-around and four apparatus titles (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor). This change shifted the sport toward identifying individual Olympic champions, not only team winners.
Helsinki 1952 also included a women’s “team portable apparatus” event, a team routine using small hand-held equipment. It was contested only in 1952 and 1956, and it highlighted how women’s gymnastics was still experimenting with what “artistic gymnastics” should include.
On July 18, 1976, Romania’s Nadia Comăneci received the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history, on the uneven bars in Montreal. The moment became a turning point for the sport’s public image, making “perfect 10” a global shorthand for gymnastics excellence.
During the women’s all-around at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the vault apparatus was set too low early in the competition, contributing to unusual falls and injuries. The incident became a major example of how equipment checks and event management can directly affect safety and competitive fairness.
In 2006, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) introduced a scoring system that removed the fixed 10.0 maximum in favor of open-ended totals combining difficulty and execution. This reform aimed to better reward harder routines and reduce the pressure to label imperfect work as “perfect.”
At the 2012 London Olympics, the U.S. women won the team all-around title, marking a major milestone in the country’s rise as a leading power in the sport. The win reflected how training systems, difficulty strategy, and team depth had shifted since earlier eras dominated by European programs.
At the Tokyo Olympics (held in 2021), the women’s team final became a widely discussed moment about athlete well-being under extreme competitive pressure. The event helped broaden public attention from medals alone to safety, mental health, and long-term athlete support.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, the United States won the women’s artistic gymnastics team all-around, showing continued dominance in the modern scoring era. The result also reflected how the sport’s center of gravity has shifted over time—from early team-only formats to today’s combination of team depth and high-difficulty individual routines.
