In mid-2000, leading European clubs and national leagues aligned with ULEB set up the Euroleague Basketball Company to run a top-tier, club-run continental competition. This marked a shift away from FIBA’s long-standing control of Europe’s main men’s club championship and began a new, more commercial era.
The 2000–01 season opened with a major split: Euroleague Basketball ran its new EuroLeague while FIBA launched the SuproLeague. Top clubs were divided between the two tournaments, creating confusion for fans and sponsors and putting pressure on both sides to reunify the sport’s top level.
In May 2001, Euroleague Basketball’s inaugural competition ended with Virtus (Kinder) Bologna winning a best-of-five finals series. At the same time, FIBA crowned its own champion in the SuproLeague, underscoring that Europe effectively had two top-level winners that year.
After the split season, the leading organizers moved back toward one main top-tier tournament under Euroleague Basketball’s umbrella. Clubs that had played in the FIBA-run SuproLeague joined the Euroleague Basketball-led competition, restoring a single, widely recognized championship pathway.
Starting with the 2001–02 season, Euroleague Basketball used a Final Four weekend to decide the champion, replacing the prior year’s finals series. The Final Four format created a predictable showcase event that was easier to market and helped build a clear, annual climax for the league.
In November 2004, FIBA Europe and ULEB signed an agreement that officially sanctioned European club competitions and set responsibilities between the organizations. The deal reduced governance conflict and provided a more stable base for Euroleague Basketball’s long-term growth.
By the late 2000s, EuroLeague regularly used a multi-stage format (Regular Season followed by a “Top 16” group stage, then playoffs and the Final Four). This structure increased the number of high-level games, helped broadcasters plan schedules, and strengthened the league’s week-to-week storylines.
The 2010 Final Four in Paris highlighted EuroLeague’s push toward major arena events in large European markets. FC Barcelona won the title, and the weekend reinforced the Final Four as a central commercial and cultural product for the league.
In July 2010, Euroleague Basketball signed a major naming-rights deal with Turkish Airlines, rebranding the competition as the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. The sponsorship signaled growing commercial maturity and helped position the league more strongly in global sports marketing.
In November 2015, Euroleague Basketball and IMG agreed to a multi-year joint venture focused on commercial media rights and content production. The partnership aimed to modernize distribution and strengthen the league’s ability to sell sponsorship and broadcast packages across borders.
The 2016–17 season introduced a major competition redesign: 16 clubs played one league table in a double round-robin (home-and-away), creating a 30-game regular season per team. This change reduced fragmented group stages and presented the EuroLeague as a true pan-European league season.
For the 2019–20 season, the competition expanded to 18 teams, increasing the regular-season schedule and extending the league’s reach to more markets. The access list also reflected a more formal mix of long-term licensed clubs and invited or qualifying teams, supporting stability for core members while enabling controlled growth.
In March 2020, the 2019–20 EuroLeague regular season was suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The interruption was a major stress test for the league’s business model, affecting schedules, ticket revenue, and broadcast planning across multiple countries.
