Irish, Scottish, and Welsh unions launch Celtic League
Labels: Irish Rugby, Scottish Rugby, Welsh RugbyIn 2001, the Irish, Scottish, and Welsh rugby unions agreed to create a cross-border professional competition to raise standards and create more high-level fixtures. The first season began with 15 teams (including the four Irish provinces, two Scottish teams, and nine Welsh clubs). This launch set the foundation for what would later become the Pro12, Pro14, and then the United Rugby Championship (URC).
