In 421 BCE, Aristophanes staged Peace at the Great (City) Dionysia, imagining a farmer rescuing the goddess Peace from captivity by the god of War. Written during real peace negotiations, the play argues for ending conflict and returning to ordinary life such as farming, festivals, and family. It shows how comedy could connect fantasy plots to urgent public debates.
In 414 BCE, The Birds earned second prize at the City Dionysia. The play’s imaginary “bird city” between humans and gods uses fantasy to reflect Athenian ambitions and frustrations during wartime. Its success shows Aristophanes’ skill at blending spectacle—chorus, costumes, and songs—with political and cultural commentary.
In early 411 BCE, Lysistrata was staged at the Lenaia and used a bold premise: women coordinate a sex strike and seize the Acropolis to push men toward peace. The comedy highlights how the war affected households and civic finances, turning those pressures into stage action. It also shows a shift in Aristophanes’ later style, where traditional Old Comedy elements (like a full parabasis, a direct chorus address) are reduced or reshaped.
Also in 411 BCE, Thesmophoriazusae was produced, probably at the City Dionysia, and centers on women at a festival plotting against the tragedian Euripides. The play continues Aristophanes’ interest in gender roles and in parodying other theatrical genres, especially tragedy. Its focus on theatre itself shows how Athenian comedy could be both political and deeply self-aware about performance culture.
In 405 BCE, The Frogs won first prize at the Lenaia, at a moment when Athens was under extreme pressure near the end of the Peloponnesian War. The play sends Dionysus to the underworld to bring back a great tragedian, turning a literary contest into a debate about what kind of art and leadership the city needs. Its victory and continuing reputation show how comedy could serve as civic reflection, not only as entertainment.
Around 391 BCE, Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen imagines Athenian women taking over the Assembly and introducing shared property and regulated relationships. Compared with earlier Old Comedy, the play is often read as part of a late transition toward less chorus-driven, more situation-based humor. It reflects how, after war and political upheaval, comic theatre increasingly explored social organization and everyday ethics as much as named political targets.
In 388 BCE, Aristophanes produced Plutus (Wealth), a late work often noted for moving away from classic Old Comedy structures. The play uses the personified god of wealth to question morality, fairness, and economic life in Athens, with less emphasis on the chorus than earlier comedies. As one of his last surviving plays, it helps mark the broader transition from aggressive, chorus-centered Old Comedy toward later, more plot-driven comic styles.
Aristophanes died around the late 380s BCE, after a career that spanned the height and aftermath of the Peloponnesian War. Because his plays are the only complete works that survive from Old Comedy, later readers often understand the genre largely through him. His surviving comedies preserved a record of how Athenians could use public theatre to argue, mock, and rethink civic life.
