The surviving text includes unusually detailed Latin stage directions, including instructions to construct “paradise” in an elevated place and to arrange visible boundaries like curtains. This suggests a performance that used a clearly organized stage area and visual symbolism (for example, distinct “paradise” and “hell” zones). Such directions help explain how vernacular liturgical drama could move toward more theatrical, public staging beyond a simple in-church reading.
In 1154, Henry II became king of England and ruled until 1189, holding major lands in Normandy and other parts of France as well. This cross-Channel political world helped Anglo-Norman French circulate as a high-status written and spoken language. The setting matters because Le Jeu d’Adam is written in an Anglo-Norman form of French, not only in Latin.
In the 13th century, the plays and related texts were copied into a single manuscript now known as Tours, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 927. The codex is on paper (not parchment) and contains, among other items, a Latin Easter play/Office of the Resurrection, Le Jeu d’Adam, chants, and the “Fifteen Signs of the Last Judgment.” Preserving multiple dramatic and devotional items together shows how closely this theatre was tied to religious practice and reading culture.
