In 1931, Harold Clurman, Cheryl Crawford, and Lee Strasberg organized a new theatre collective in New York City that emphasized ensemble work and naturalistic acting. The company aimed to train actors continuously while producing plays that reflected contemporary social realities.
The Group Theatre’s first production, Paul Green’s The House of Connelly, premiered in New York in late September 1931. Its early reception highlighted what would become the Group’s signature strength: disciplined ensemble acting rather than star-centered performance.
Sidney Kingsley’s hospital drama Men in White opened in September 1933, directed by Strasberg, and became a major commercial success for the Group Theatre. The production’s long run helped stabilize the company financially and showed that an ensemble-driven style could succeed on Broadway.
In 1934, Men in White received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, bringing national recognition to both the playwright and the producing company. The award reinforced the Group Theatre’s reputation for serious, socially grounded American plays.
Clifford Odets’s one-act Waiting for Lefty premiered at a benefit performance in January 1935 and quickly became a defining piece of Depression-era protest drama. Its direct appeal to labor issues helped make Odets the Group Theatre’s most prominent playwright.
Awake and Sing! opened on Broadway in February 1935 in a Group Theatre production. Focused on a Bronx family under economic pressure, it expanded the Group’s social realism into a full-length family drama and strengthened the company’s artistic identity.
In March 1935, Waiting for Lefty opened on Broadway under the Group Theatre’s auspices, paired with Odets’s Till the Day I Die. This pairing showed how the Group used its ensemble to stage tightly focused political dramas during the mid-1930s.
Odets’s Paradise Lost premiered on Broadway in December 1935 in a Group Theatre production directed by Clurman. The play shifted from strike-centered action to a broader portrait of middle-class collapse during the Depression, reflecting the company’s attempt to widen its social themes.
Odets’s Golden Boy opened in November 1937 and ran for a substantial stretch, becoming the Group Theatre’s most successful Broadway production. Its financial success helped support the company, but it also underscored the growing pressure to produce hits to survive.
In February 1938, the Group produced Robert Ardrey’s Casey Jones, directed by Elia Kazan, but it closed quickly. The short run illustrated how difficult it had become for the company to balance experimentation, politics, and Broadway economics as the decade progressed.
In late 1938, Rocket to the Moon premiered in a Group Theatre production directed by Clurman. Compared with the strike-driven urgency of earlier Odets work, the play focused more on personal choice and dissatisfaction, signaling a broader range—and possible drift—in the Group’s repertory aims.
Robert Ardrey’s Thunder Rock opened in November 1939 in a Group Theatre production directed by Kazan and closed after a brief run. The play’s warning against isolationism came at a time when many American audiences were reluctant to embrace pro-intervention themes, limiting its Broadway impact even as it later found success elsewhere.
Irwin Shaw’s Retreat to Pleasure opened in December 1940, produced by the Group Theatre and directed by Clurman. Its short run marked the end of the Group’s Broadway output and highlighted how the company’s original ensemble mission was becoming harder to sustain.
By 1941, the Group Theatre dissolved as a functioning company after ten years of work. Even with internal disagreements and financial pressures, its training practices and ensemble approach left a lasting model for American acting and directing.
In October 1947, former Group Theatre leaders and members—Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford, and Robert Lewis—founded the Actors Studio in New York. The Studio created a durable institutional home for refining the acting techniques associated with the Group, helping extend its influence long after the original company ended.
