Antonin Artaud became closely connected with the Surrealists in the mid-1920s. His involvement linked theatre to Surrealist goals of breaking everyday logic and attacking social “common sense,” setting the stage for his later demand for a more physical, disruptive kind of performance.
André Breton’s Manifeste du surréalisme helped define Surrealism as a movement and gave it a public platform in Paris. This matters for theatre because Surrealism encouraged artists to challenge realism and explore dreams, shock, and the unconscious mind—ideas that later shaped Artaud’s approach to performance.
Artaud completed Jet de Sang (“Spurt of Blood”), an extremely short, violent, and dreamlike play. Even though it was not staged widely at the time, it shows his early push toward stage images meant to hit the audience like a shock rather than tell a realistic story.
Artaud, Roger Vitrac, and Robert Aron founded the Théâtre Alfred Jarry as an experimental company linked to avant-garde currents, including Surrealism. The group became a practical testing ground for new staging ideas, helping Artaud move from theory and poetry toward concrete theatrical experiments.
Artaud’s relationship with the Surrealist group ended during the mid-1920s, as political and artistic disagreements grew. The break mattered because Artaud kept Surrealism’s radical imagination but turned more fully toward theatre as his main tool for transforming audiences.
After a brief run of experimental programs and productions, the Théâtre Alfred Jarry disbanded. Its end highlighted the difficulty of sustaining avant-garde theatre financially and institutionally, but the experience fed directly into Artaud’s later Theatre of Cruelty writings.
Breton’s Second Manifeste du surréalisme sharpened Surrealism’s direction and reinforced that the movement was not just an art style, but a wider challenge to society. For theatre-makers around Artaud, this helped keep pressure on conventional “literary” drama and encouraged new forms of stage language.
At the Paris International Colonial Exposition, Artaud watched Balinese performers (including gamelan music and dance). He believed this kind of highly physical, stylized performance showed how theatre could communicate through movement, rhythm, and stage design—not mainly through dialogue—supporting his shift toward a “total theatre.”
Artaud’s first manifesto of the Theatre of Cruelty appeared in the Nouvelle Revue Française. He argued that theatre should break through social habits and reach the audience through sound, gesture, light, and disturbing images—treating the stage as a kind of direct emotional and sensory force.
Artaud presented “The Theatre and the Plague” as a performative lecture at the Sorbonne, comparing theatre’s power to the way a plague exposes hidden truths and social breakdown. The event became an emblem of his style: not calm explanation, but public performance meant to unsettle listeners and demonstrate his ideas in action.
Artaud staged Les Cenci at the Théâtre des Folies-Wagram, premiering on May 6, 1935. It was his major attempt to put Theatre of Cruelty ideas into practice through intense sound, violent subject matter, and stylized staging, showing both the ambition of his program and how hard it was to sustain in mainstream theatre spaces.
Artaud left Europe for Mexico in January 1936, hoping to find forms of culture and ritual he thought Europe had lost. The journey reinforced his interest in performance as a kind of ceremony—something meant to transform participants—rather than theatre as polite entertainment.
Artaud’s essay collection Le Théâtre et son double appeared in early 1938 and gathered his key writings from the early 1930s, including the Theatre of Cruelty manifestos. The book became the main vehicle for his influence: even when his productions were few, directors and theorists could study his arguments about a theatre built from movement, sound, and staging as a full “language.”
In late November 1947, Artaud recorded Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu for French radio, using harsh vocal sounds, percussion, and anti-authoritarian text. It extended Theatre of Cruelty principles into radio by treating the human voice and noise as physical impacts, not just carriers of meaning.
The radio piece was scheduled to air on February 2, 1948, but was banned just before broadcast. The ban shows how Artaud’s work collided with public institutions: his theatre aimed to confront taboo subjects and unsettle audiences, while broadcasters feared the social and political consequences of that confrontation.
Artaud died on March 4, 1948, ending his direct involvement in theatre-making. His Theatre of Cruelty survived mainly through his writings and the controversies around his late work, becoming a lasting reference point for later European and global avant-garde theatre seeking more physical, anti-realistic forms.
