La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club opened in New York City in 1961 under founder Ellen Stewart. Its early home was a converted, informal venue used at night for new plays, showing how small, adaptable rooms could support emerging artists. This Off-Off-Broadway model normalized low-cost, flexible performance spaces in the U.S.
In 1968, director Peter Brook published The Empty Space, arguing that theatre can happen in “any space” when an actor and a watcher share it. This widely read idea encouraged artists and designers to treat nontraditional rooms as legitimate stages. It also supported the turn toward simpler, reconfigurable settings where layout could change from show to show.
On June 6, 1968, Richard Schechner’s Dionysus in 69 opened at the Performing Garage in New York. The production used “environmental theatre,” redesigning the space with platforms and shared areas so performers and audience occupied the same environment. This approach reinforced the idea that flexible rooms could be actively reshaped to fit each production’s goals.
In 1970, director Peter Stein and a new ensemble came to the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer in Berlin (now part of HAU). The venue became known for ensemble-based work that could adapt to different staging needs, reflecting a broader European push toward theatres that supported experimentation. This period helped spread expectations that contemporary theatre spaces should be changeable and artist-driven.
In 1970, Peter Brook and producer Micheline Rozan founded the International Centre for Theatre Research (CIRT) in Paris. The group emphasized intercultural collaboration and exploratory performance methods, often prioritizing adaptable space over elaborate scenery. This work helped connect flexible staging ideas with international touring and research-based theatre practice.
In 1974, the Royal Shakespeare Company converted a corrugated-iron rehearsal room into a small studio theatre that became known as The Other Place. Designed for new writing and experimental work, it functioned as a “black box” where stage and seating could be arranged in different ways. The venue became a high-profile model for how major institutions could support flexible, lower-budget work alongside mainstage productions.
In 1974, La MaMa purchased 66 East 4th Street in Manhattan, creating a larger flexible theatre space (later the Ellen Stewart Theatre). Moving from tiny rooms into a bigger, still-adaptable venue showed a pathway for experimental groups to scale up without abandoning spatial flexibility. It also helped anchor flexible-space practice within a durable neighborhood arts institution.
In 1974, Brook and Rozan reopened the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, keeping much of its worn, non-glossy look rather than restoring it to a polished “museum” finish. The reopening showed how an older building could be repurposed for modern performance with an emphasis on atmosphere and adaptability. It became an influential example of using space itself—rather than scenery—to shape audience experience.
On January 31, 1977, the Centre Pompidou opened in Paris as a multipurpose cultural building meant to support changing uses over time. Its high-tech “services-outside” approach promoted the idea that arts buildings could be designed as adaptable frameworks rather than fixed monuments. This broader architectural trend reinforced theatre makers’ interest in transformable rooms and reconfigurable technical systems.
On March 4, 1977, London’s National Theatre opened the Cottesloe (now the Dorfman Theatre). The space was designed to hold different audience sizes and support multiple layouts—such as end-stage, in-the-round, or other configurations—by changing seating and floor arrangements. It became a major “flexible theatre” inside a national institution, proving that adaptability could be built into permanent architecture.
In 1982, The Pit opened at London’s Barbican Centre as a small, adaptable theatre space. Its scale and reconfigurable setup made it suitable for emerging companies and forms that did not fit traditional proscenium theatres. By embedding a modular studio within a large cultural complex, the Barbican helped normalize the black-box/flexible-space model in mainstream programming.
