A military coup in Brazil overthrew President João Goulart and began a dictatorship that expanded censorship and political repression. This new climate pushed many artists to look for indirect, participatory, or community-based ways to speak about power and injustice. The conditions created an urgent backdrop for Augusto Boal’s later experiments in political theatre.
In Rio de Janeiro, Augusto Boal directed Show Opinião, a musical “show-manifesto” created with artists linked to the outlawed Popular Culture Center (CPC) of Brazil’s National Students’ Union. Using songs and spoken testimony about social life, the production became a widely cited early cultural reaction to the post-coup regime. It helped model a politically engaged performance style that influenced later documentary and participatory approaches.
Boal and Gianfrancesco Guarnieri’s musical Arena Conta Zumbi premiered at Teatro de Arena in São Paulo. By revisiting the history of resistance (the Palmares quilombo and Zumbi), the production linked national history to contemporary political tensions. Its success encouraged further experiments with politically themed musicals and staging systems that supported ensemble storytelling.
Arena Conta Tiradentes premiered as another history-based political musical, focusing on the Brazilian independence conspirator Tiradentes. Documentation from Boal’s archive describes the production as an important moment in systematizing the Sistema Coringa (“Joker system”), a method that shifts roles and uses a facilitator-like figure to guide meaning for the audience. This work strengthened Boal’s interest in making theatre a tool for analysis rather than passive consumption.
Around 1970, Boal and collaborators at Teatro de Arena developed Newspaper Theatre (Teatro Jornal), which turns news items into short scenes for public discussion. A later account from Boal’s official website describes Teatro Jornal: Primeira Edição as his last Arena production and an inaugural bridge toward Theatre of the Oppressed work. The approach helped connect performance to everyday political information and media framing.
In 1971, Brazil’s dictatorship arrested Boal; accounts commonly note that he was imprisoned and tortured. Exile followed, moving his work from Brazil into a wider Latin American and then European context. This shift mattered because Theatre of the Oppressed became a portable set of practices, tested across countries facing different forms of political and social conflict.
Boal’s key book Teatro do oprimido e outras poéticas políticas was published in Portuguese by Civilização Brasileira (Rio de Janeiro), consolidating essays and practice-based lessons developed across the 1960s and early 1970s. The book tied theatre history and theory to concrete participatory methods meant to help communities analyze oppression and rehearse change. It became a major reference point for political, epic, and documentary theatre practitioners internationally.
An English-language edition, Theatre of the Oppressed, was published (originally by Urizen Books), making Boal’s methods more accessible to readers and theatre-makers outside Latin America. This publication helped standardize key ideas such as turning spectators into active “spect-actors” and using a facilitator (“Joker”) to guide discussion and intervention. Wider circulation supported TO’s adoption in educational, community, and activist theatre work.
In Paris, Boal established the Centre du Théâtre de l’Opprimé (CTO-Paris), creating an institutional base for training, performances, and international exchange. The center supported systematic teaching of techniques such as Forum Theatre and Image Theatre, and helped TO become a networked practice rather than a single company’s style. This was a turning point in TO’s long-term sustainability in Europe.
Practitioners organized an early international festival of Theatre of the Oppressed in Paris, helping connect groups working in different languages and political settings. Festivals like this made it easier to compare techniques, share case studies, and adapt TO to local needs (such as migration, labor conflict, or gender-based oppression). This helped TO develop as a global movement with recognizable methods and vocabulary.
After years abroad, Boal returned to Brazil and established a Centre for the Theatre of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro. The center provided a home base for workshops, community companies, and projects that linked theatre-making to civic life. This return connected TO back to the Brazilian social struggles that shaped its early development, now enriched by international experience.
Boal published O Arco-Íris do Desejo (Rainbow of Desire), describing theatre techniques aimed at internalized oppression—what he called “the cop in the head.” This marked a notable expansion of TO beyond overt political censorship and state violence to include psychological and social pressures experienced in everyday life. The work broadened the range of topics and communities that could use TO methods.
Boal was elected to Rio de Janeiro’s city council and developed Legislative Theatre, adapting Forum Theatre to produce real policy proposals. Community members staged problems, intervened with alternatives, and translated the outcomes into draft laws for official consideration. This phase demonstrated a concrete end-to-end pathway from performance to governance, closing the 1964–1995 arc with TO embedded in formal democratic institutions.
