By spring 1942, composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist-bookwriter Oscar Hammerstein II agreed to work as a team. Oklahoma! opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on March 31, 1943. It was their first stage collaboration and helped popularize the idea of the “integrated musical,” where music, plot, and character development work together. Its success made Rodgers and Hammerstein the leading musical-theatre team of the era.
Carousel opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 19, 1945. Compared with Oklahoma!, it pushed into more serious themes and a more continuous, story-driven score. The show confirmed that the team could take creative risks while still drawing a broad audience.
Allegro opened on Broadway on October 10, 1947. It followed the life of a doctor tempted by status and money, aiming to comment on pressures in modern American life. Although it never matched their earlier hits, it showed the team experimenting with new theatrical forms and subject matter.
South Pacific opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 7, 1949. Based on stories by James A. Michener, it combined wartime romance with a direct message about racial prejudice, including the song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught.” Its popularity showed that a mainstream musical could address serious social issues.
The King and I opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on March 29, 1951. Inspired by a story of Anna Leonowens in 1860s Siam, it explored culture clash, power, and mutual respect through character-driven songs. The show’s success strengthened the team’s reputation for adapting historical and international material for Broadway audiences.
Me and Juliet opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on May 28, 1953. Set behind the scenes of a musical, it focused on everyday working relationships and a romantic triangle. The show ran a moderate length, signaling that even top creative teams could face limits in audience interest when expectations were high.
Pipe Dream premiered on Broadway on November 30, 1955. Based on John Steinbeck’s novel Sweet Thursday, it centered on a community in Monterey, California, and a romance involving “Doc” and Suzy. Despite strong advance sales, it became a financial disappointment, highlighting the risk of adapting quieter, less traditional stories into big Broadway musicals.
Flower Drum Song opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on December 1, 1958. Based on C. Y. Lee’s novel, it told a story of immigration, family expectations, and romance in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The original production was notable for featuring a Broadway cast with a majority of Asian-American performers.
The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November 16, 1959. It dramatized the von Trapp family’s story against the rise of Nazism, pairing accessible songs with a clear moral conflict. As their final major Broadway work together, it summarized many of their strengths: story-first songwriting, emotional clarity, and broad appeal.
By the end of 1959, Rodgers and Hammerstein had built a body of work that strongly shaped how later musicals were written and staged. Across Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music, they helped prove that popular theatre could blend entertainment with serious themes. The lasting performance history of these shows marks the enduring outcome of their 1942–1959 collaboration period.
Oscar Hammerstein II died on August 23, 1960, after a period of illness. His death ended the team’s ability to create new stage works together, closing a defining partnership in American musical theatre. Their existing shows, however, continued to be produced widely and became standards of the repertoire.
