Producer-director Joseph Papp launched the Shakespeare Workshop in New York City to build acting and directing skill through Shakespeare and to make classical theater more accessible. This step created the organization that later became the New York Shakespeare Festival and, eventually, the Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park.
By the late 1950s, Papp’s group was organizing free Shakespeare productions that traveled to multiple city parks, including Central Park. These mobile shows proved there was a large audience for no-cost outdoor theatre, but also showed how difficult it was to move stages, lights, and seating around the city.
With the festival gaining popularity, Papp began seeking funding for a permanent outdoor amphitheater in Central Park. The effort faced resistance from powerful city officials, turning the project into a public debate over what kinds of culture belong in shared city space.
After changes in New York City parks leadership, the city moved forward with building a permanent outdoor theater. When public funds ran short, publisher George T. Delacorte Jr. contributed the remaining money, and the venue was named the Delacorte Theater in gratitude.
The Delacorte Theater opened in Central Park in 1962, giving the festival a stable home and a much larger audience capacity. One of the first major productions there was The Merchant of Venice, starring George C. Scott and James Earl Jones, signaling the festival’s growing artistic ambition.
A bronze sculpture of Prospero and Miranda from The Tempest was installed outside the Delacorte Theater in 1966. Along with later companion pieces, the artwork helped mark the Delacorte as a cultural landmark in the park—not just a temporary stage, but a recognized public venue.
In 1967, Papp opened the Public Theater in the former Astor Library building, creating a permanent base for producing new work and supporting artists beyond the summer season. The Public’s growth strengthened the infrastructure behind Shakespeare in the Park and helped link free outdoor theater to a larger civic arts mission.
In 1977, a companion sculpture of Romeo and Juliet was unveiled outside the Delacorte. The visible public art reinforced the venue’s identity and helped weave Shakespeare in the Park into the everyday landscape of Central Park for residents and visitors.
In 1980, the Public Theater staged The Pirates of Penzance at the Delacorte as part of the summer program, and it transferred to Broadway in January 1981. The success showed how free, outdoor performances could feed the wider theater economy—using public access and high craft to build momentum for work with national reach.
Joseph Papp died in 1991, ending the founding era of Shakespeare in the Park. The program’s continuation after his death demonstrated that free Shakespeare at the Delacorte had become a durable civic institution, not a single-producer project.
By the late 1990s, the Delacorte underwent major capital work (often summarized as a 1999 upgrade) to address aging infrastructure and support continued large-scale productions. This investment reflected the citywide importance of the venue and the expectation that it would keep serving big summer audiences for years to come.
In 2000, the Public announced The Winter’s Tale (June 21–July 16) and Julius Caesar (Aug. 8–Sept. 7) as that summer’s free Delacorte productions. The season illustrates the established “civic ritual” of Shakespeare in the Park by this point: free tickets, high-profile directors, and Central Park as a shared cultural gathering place at the close of the 1954–2000 period.
