A surviving branch ledger from the Florentine merchant firm of Giovanni Farolfi & Company (kept in Provence) is widely treated by accounting historians as the earliest known example of a commercial double-entry system. It records transactions with matching debits and credits and shows an effort to balance accounts, signaling a move from simple lists toward system-wide control of profit, loss, and capital.
The same Farolfi branch ledger continues into 1300, reinforcing that this was not a one-off experiment but an operating method used over time. The surviving pages help historians trace how Tuscan merchant techniques could be applied in distant trading centers connected to Italian finance and credit.
The treasurers’ (Messari) accounts of the city of Genoa are often cited as the oldest discovered record of a complete double-entry system in a public institution. They show debits and credits set out in a structured way and carry forward balances from the prior year, showing how the method could support continuity and oversight across fiscal years.
From the 1360s into the early 1400s, Francesco Datini’s network of companies produced extensive account books and correspondence. This kind of complex, multi-city trade—mixing goods, credit, and partnerships—created strong pressure for standardized bookkeeping practices that could summarize many transactions into clear results for managers and partners.
Datini died in Prato in 1410, leaving his effects to a charitable foundation and leaving behind a major body of business records. The survival of these materials matters because they provide concrete evidence of late-medieval commercial organization and the accounting routines used to monitor multiple firms over time.
In 1458, Benedetto Cotrugli wrote a merchant’s manual (Libro de l’Arte dela Mercatura) that included a short chapter describing double-entry bookkeeping. This is important because it shows the method was developed enough to be taught in writing as part of a broader training program for merchants, not only practiced inside firms.
The earliest surviving copy of Cotrugli’s manual is dated 1475 (even though the original work is dated 1458). The gap between composition and the oldest surviving copy highlights a key challenge in tracing the spread of double entry: practices could be widespread before the evidence that survives becomes common.
The Treviso Arithmetic (1478) is an early printed commercial arithmetic text written in the Venetian vernacular. While not a double-entry treatise, it represents the same practical education environment—often linked to abacus (abbaco) teaching—that helped merchants compute prices, exchange rates, and other figures that bookkeeping systems needed.
In 1494, Luca Pacioli’s Summa de arithmetica was printed in Venice and included the first published description of double-entry bookkeeping, often called the “Venetian method.” Printing mattered because it made a detailed, teachable description available beyond local apprenticeships, helping the technique travel to other cities and later to other countries.
By the late 1400s, double-entry bookkeeping had moved from scattered surviving ledgers to written explanations and printed instruction. This shift helped turn double entry into a repeatable process: transactions could be recorded consistently (debit/credit), checked by balancing, and summarized for decision-making in partnerships and banks.
In the early 1500s, authors built directly on Pacioli’s printed description to produce specialized accounting manuals. Domenico Manzoni’s work is often cited as a major “after Pacioli” double-entry text, showing how printed guides were becoming part of professional practice rather than rare exceptions.
Cotrugli’s merchant manual was printed in Venice in 1573, long after it was written. Its printing illustrates a long-term outcome of the medieval Italian development: once double entry was articulated in texts and aligned with print culture, it could be circulated, compared, and adapted well beyond its original commercial cities.
