One partner supplied capital while another traveled and conducted the trade, and profits were shared by agreement. This structure helped finance long-distance commerce while limiting the investor’s risk to the amount invested.
Around 1202, Florence’s Arte del Cambio (guild of bankers and money changers) formed and began organizing those who exchanged currencies and provided deposits and credit. Guild regulation mattered because exchange and credit depended on trust, recordkeeping, and enforceable business norms. This institutional base supported later growth in bills of exchange and other paper-based payments.
In 1252, Florence introduced the gold florin, a high-quality coin that became widely accepted in international trade. A dependable coin made it easier to price contracts, settle accounts, and compare exchange rates between cities. This stable monetary reference point complemented the growing use of written instruments such as bills of exchange.
By the late 1200s, the bill of exchange had developed into a more standardized tool for moving money between cities. In practice, a merchant could deposit funds in one place and arrange payment to a beneficiary elsewhere through a correspondent, reducing the need to ship coins. This helped international trade scale up while lowering theft risk and transport costs.
In the 1340s, large Florentine firms such as the Bardi and Peruzzi failed after severe financial strain, including large sovereign loans and political instability. The crash showed how dangerous concentrated credit could be, especially when powerful borrowers delayed or refused repayment. The episode pushed later bankers to diversify and to rely heavily on instruments like bills of exchange within broader branch networks.
Over the 1300s, Florentine bankers increasingly combined currency exchange with credit, deposits, and long-distance remittance. Bills of exchange became central because they could settle trade payments and also embed short-term finance through exchange rates and time delays. This broadened “banking” from market benches into networked, cross-city financial services.
By the late 1300s, surviving merchant records show bills of exchange used as everyday business paperwork. Large correspondence collections, such as the Datini archive, include many bills of exchange alongside account statements and payment orders. This evidence reflects a mature system where paper instructions and correspondent networks were normal tools of trade finance.
In 1397, Giovanni di Bicci de’ Medici established the Medici Bank in Florence. The bank grew through branches and partnerships across multiple cities, a structure well-suited to correspondent payments and bills of exchange. This model helped Florentine banking remain influential after the earlier fourteenth-century collapses.
Through the 1400s, bills of exchange enabled merchants to pay suppliers and move funds across Europe without carrying large amounts of coin. The instrument worked through trusted correspondents: one party ordered payment in another city, and settlement relied on bookkeeping and reputation. This method fit closely with Florentine branch banking and with commenda-style investing in long-distance ventures.
On 1478-04-26, the Pazzi conspiracy attempted to overthrow Medici influence in Florence through an assassination attack during mass. Giuliano de’ Medici was killed and Lorenzo de’ Medici survived, and the aftermath strengthened Medici political control. Political stability and factional conflict mattered for banking because credit depended on enforcement, reputation, and a functioning state.
In 1494, Charles VIII of France invaded Italy and entered Florence; political upheaval led to the Medici family’s expulsion from the city. The disruption damaged Medici financial operations and weakened the wider Florentine banking environment that relied on predictable governance and safe communications. This marked a major turning point for Medici-led banking networks built around bills of exchange.
By the mid-to-late 1490s, the Medici Bank had effectively ceased to operate as a major European institution, ending an important phase of Florentine-led international banking. Even as particular firms rose and fell, bills of exchange and commenda-style partnerships remained durable building blocks for trade finance. The Florentine experience helped establish a pattern of branch networks, correspondent payments, and contract-based risk sharing that later European finance would expand.
