In the early 1200s, Siena’s Bonsignori family built up a large merchant fortune and began operating as money changers and international traders. This commercial base mattered because it provided the capital and relationships that later supported a major banking network across Europe.
By the mid-1230s, the Bonsignori were acting as campsores (money changers/financial agents) for the papal Camera Apostolica. This early tie to the papacy helped the firm win trust, gain steady business, and learn how to move funds across long distances.
During the 1230s–1240s, Orlando and his brother Bonifazio expanded the family’s scale and political connections in Siena and beyond. These links—especially with high-level church figures—were crucial for turning a merchant house into a bank that could handle large, cross-border payments.
In 1255, after Bonifazio’s death, Orlando Bonsignori organized the Gran Tavola (“Great Table”) in Siena. It quickly became one of Europe’s most powerful merchant-banking enterprises, using a network of branches to exchange currencies, take deposits, and extend credit.
In the 1260s, the Gran Tavola became the exclusive depository-general for much of the income of the Papal States. This role mattered because it tied the bank’s fortunes to the papacy’s ability to collect taxes and transfer money safely across Europe.
Under Pope Clement IV, the Gran Tavola was responsible for collecting ecclesiastical tithes earmarked for the Holy Land. Handling this church-wide revenue stream reinforced the bank’s international reach and deepened its reliance on papal business.
Orlando Bonsignori died in 1273, and contemporaries linked the bank’s strength closely to his personal leadership and relationships. After his death, the Gran Tavola struggled to maintain the same level of political access and coordination across its branch network.
As pressure mounted, the Bonsignori worked to settle debts and stabilize their position. Accounts of the family’s business history describe large repayments to creditors between 1292 and 1298, signaling a prolonged effort to manage a serious liquidity crisis rather than a single sudden collapse.
In the late 1200s, Florence’s merchant-bankers gained an advantage as the gold florin spread and became increasingly important in papal finance. Research on papal records emphasizes that under Pope Boniface VIII (1294–1303) Florentine firms achieved a dominant position, weakening older Sienese banking connections.
By 1298, the Gran Tavola is widely described as having failed, ending its period as a leading European bank. Histories link the failure to a mix of leadership loss, intense competition, and political-financial shocks that disrupted international credit and confiscated or blocked assets.
After the Gran Tavola’s dissolution, the family reorganized through a successor partnership often described as the “Società dei figli di Bonsignore” (Company of the Sons of Bonsignore). This change shows how medieval banking could survive a major failure by restructuring ownership and bringing in new partners.
The Gran Tavola’s collapse became a turning point for Siena’s international banking role, helping clear space for other Tuscan and Italian banking networks to lead major cross-border finance. The longer-term outcome was a more competitive environment in which papal and royal clients increasingly relied on alternative banking centers, especially Florence.
