In Bombay (now Mumbai), a group of brokers formalized their market activity into an association that later became known as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). This helped move securities trading from informal meetups into a more organized marketplace.
The brokers’ association was formally constituted, strengthening its governance and membership structure. This step helped the exchange operate more consistently as trading volumes and participation grew.
The Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956 came into force in early 1957, giving the Indian government a legal basis to recognize and regulate stock exchanges. This broader change shaped how exchanges such as BSE would be supervised.
After India established the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act (SCRA) framework to regulate stock exchanges, BSE received permanent government recognition. This recognition supported standardized rules and oversight in India’s securities markets.
BSE’s headquarters building on Dalal Street—later known as Phiroze Jeejeebhoy Towers—was completed. The move symbolized the exchange’s growth and its central role in Mumbai’s financial district.
BSE introduced the Sensex, designed to track the performance of 30 large, actively traded companies listed on the exchange. The index became a widely followed indicator of Indian equity market conditions.
A car bomb exploded in the basement of the Bombay Stock Exchange building during the 1993 Bombay bombings. The attack damaged the building and disrupted the city’s financial hub, underscoring how market infrastructure can be a target during crises.
BSE started the Bombay Online Trading System (BOLT), replacing much of the older, floor-based “open outcry” method with electronic trading. This shift improved speed, transparency, and the ability to scale nationwide access.
BSE launched futures on the Sensex, described by the exchange as India’s first exchange-traded index derivative contract. Derivatives are financial contracts whose value is linked to an underlying asset (here, an index), and they broadened hedging and trading tools in Indian markets.
BSE introduced the BSE Teck Index, reporting it as India’s first free-float adjusted equity index focused on technology, media, and telecom. “Free-float” indexing is based mainly on shares available for public trading, not tightly held promoter stakes, which can make index weights more market-representative.
India’s market regulator, SEBI, approved BSE’s plan to convert into a for-profit company and separate ownership and management from trading rights. This reform aimed to reduce conflicts of interest common in member-owned exchanges and align governance with modern market standards.
Following the demutualisation process, the exchange was incorporated as a public company under the name “Bombay Stock Exchange Limited.” The new corporate form supported investment, professional management, and clearer accountability as markets expanded.
BSE launched BSE StAR MF, a platform that allows mutual fund transactions through exchange infrastructure. This helped expand the exchange’s role beyond equities and supported more standardized processing for mutual fund purchases and redemptions.
The company changed its name from “Bombay Stock Exchange Limited” to “BSE Limited.” The shorter name reflected its established brand identity and supported broader product and market positioning.
BSE launched its SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) platform to help smaller companies raise capital and list in a market designed for their scale. This created a more accessible path to public fundraising beyond the main exchange board.
India International Exchange (India INX), a BSE subsidiary at GIFT City’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), commenced trading. This created an India-based venue aimed at serving international and cross-border market activity with extended trading hours and multiple asset classes.
BSE’s shares were listed on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), marking the first listing of an Indian stock exchange. Public listing increased disclosure obligations and gave outside investors a direct stake in the exchange’s business performance.
