Gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand in 1886, rapidly expanding mining and finance in the Johannesburg area. This boom created strong demand for a formal place where shares could be bought and sold and new mining ventures could raise capital.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) was established on 8 November 1887 to support investment and trading linked to the gold rush economy. It became a central institution for raising capital and pricing mining shares in South Africa.
The Johannesburg Exchange & Chambers Company (the early corporate vehicle behind the exchange) was formally registered on 28 February 1888. This helped move trading from an informal market toward a more structured exchange with clearer rules and membership.
In 1903 a purpose-built exchange building opened on Hollard Street. A dedicated building reflected the JSE’s growing activity and the need for more space and better organization than earlier, improvised trading locations.
In 1947 the Stock Exchanges Control Act was promulgated, providing a stronger legal framework for how stock exchanges operated in South Africa. Regulation mattered because it set standards for member conduct and helped build investor confidence in the market.
After World War II, the JSE again needed more capacity, and a rebuilt exchange at Hollard Street officially opened in February 1961. The long rebuild shows how rising trading volumes and listings pushed the exchange to modernize its facilities.
In 1963 the JSE was admitted to the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), an international association of regulated exchanges. This marked recognition of the JSE as part of the global exchange community and supported greater alignment with international practices.
In 1996, South Africa’s formal bond market moved from the JSE to the newly formed Bond Exchange of South Africa (BESA). This separation created a specialized venue for bonds, while the JSE focused more on equities and related products until later consolidation.
On 7 June 1996, the JSE closed its open-outcry trading floor and introduced the Johannesburg Equities Trading (JET) system. Moving from shouted floor trading to electronic, order-driven trading improved speed and transparency and aligned the JSE with global technology trends.
In September 2000, the JSE began relocating from the Johannesburg central business district to Sandton, completing the move by early October. The shift followed a wider move by financial institutions and placed the exchange in South Africa’s main commercial hub.
In 2001, the JSE acquired the South African Futures Exchange (SAFEX), bringing listed futures and options more directly into the JSE group. This expanded the exchange beyond shares into derivatives (contracts whose value depends on an underlying asset), supporting more risk management tools for investors.
In May 2002, the JSE replaced its JET system with London Stock Exchange technology, including a new trading system and real-time information tools. This was part of a broader modernization effort to improve performance and connectivity for market participants.
In October 2003, the JSE launched AltX (Alternative Exchange) as a market aimed at small and mid-sized companies. The goal was to widen access to public capital and create a clearer growth path from smaller listings to the JSE Main Board.
In 2005, the JSE demutualised, meaning it shifted from a member-owned organization to a corporate structure. This change supported clearer governance and opened the door to the exchange eventually listing its own shares.
On 5 June 2006, JSE Limited listed its own shares on its exchange. Self-listing increased transparency through public reporting and tied the exchange more directly to market expectations about performance and governance.
In 2009, the JSE acquired the Bond Exchange of South Africa (BESA) and rebranded it as the JSE Debt Market. This brought bond trading and related interest-rate products back into the JSE group, helping create a more integrated multi-asset exchange.
On 18 June 2012, the JSE became a founding member of the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative. This signaled a commitment to encouraging better corporate disclosure and practices related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.
In 2012, the JSE launched the Millennium Exchange trading platform for its Equity Market after extensive testing and consultation. The system improved speed and reliability, supporting more modern trading practices and higher message volumes.
On 14 April 2014, the JSE introduced a rebrand to reflect its role as a modern exchange group offering multiple markets and services. The update also supported its positioning as a gateway for investment into and within Africa.
On 12 June 2019, the JSE went live with Equity and FX (foreign exchange) derivatives on Millennium Exchange and Millennium Surveillance provided by LSEG Technology. This unified more asset classes on a common platform, improving operational efficiency and surveillance across markets.
By 2020, the JSE marked roughly 20 years in Sandton after its 2000 move from central Johannesburg. The anniversary highlights how the exchange’s physical location, technology, and product range changed over time while it remained South Africa’s main public market hub.
