Regular trading began in Tokyo’s Kabutochō district, which later became Japan’s best-known financial center. Early activity focused heavily on government bonds before stock trading grew in importance over time.
During World War II, Japan merged major regional exchanges into a single Japan Securities Exchange as part of a controlled wartime economy. This reduced independent market operations and centralized securities trading under tighter state direction.
As the war situation worsened, exchange trading was suspended. The shutdown marked a break in Japan’s prewar market system and set the stage for major postwar reforms under Allied occupation.
The wartime Japan Securities Exchange was dissolved as Japan’s postwar institutions were reorganized. This shift was linked to broader efforts to rebuild the economy and reform corporate ownership structures in the occupation period.
Tokyo Stock Exchange was founded in its present form under Japan’s postwar securities framework. This refounding prepared the exchange to reopen with rules influenced by modern securities regulation.
The Tokyo Stock Exchange reopened, restoring a centralized venue for share trading in postwar Japan. Reopening supported capital formation for companies and helped restart financial market activity under occupation-era rules.

TSE launched the arrowhead cash equity trading system to improve processing speed and reliability. The system was designed to support large volumes and low-latency (very fast) electronic trading demanded by modern market participants.
Japan Exchange Group (JPX) was established through the business combination of Tokyo Stock Exchange Group and Osaka Securities Exchange. The move aimed to strengthen Japan’s exchange infrastructure and consolidate oversight and operations, including later integration of Osaka’s cash equity market into TSE.
A system failure caused TSE to halt trading in all listed issues for the full day, an event that highlighted operational risk in fully electronic markets. JPX later published reports and measures aimed at preventing similar disruptions.
TSE reorganized its main equity markets into three clearer segments—Prime, Standard, and Growth—to improve transparency of listing expectations. The restructuring was designed to make the market easier to understand for investors and to push listed companies toward stronger governance and sustained value creation.
TSE asked Prime and Standard companies to take steps showing management is conscious of cost of capital and stock price, aiming to improve corporate value and market confidence. It later began publishing lists of companies that disclosed responses, using disclosure as a lever to encourage follow-through.
JPX rolled out arrowhead4.0, the fourth generation of the arrowhead system, to improve resilience and global competitiveness. The update added new features including an extension of trading hours and a closing auction session, reflecting ongoing modernization of Tokyo’s market structure and technology.
