A group of Toronto businesspeople met with the intention of forming an "Association of Brokers." This early organization is widely described as the framework that later evolved into the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX).
Brokers formally created what became the Toronto Stock Exchange, establishing a more organized marketplace for trading securities in Toronto. Early trading was limited and the list of securities was small, reflecting Canada’s still-developing capital markets.
The Exchange was incorporated by an Act of the Ontario Legislature, giving it clearer legal standing and a more formal governance structure. Incorporation helped the Exchange operate more reliably as listings and trading activity expanded.
The Exchange introduced the TSE 300 index and launched CATS (Computer Assisted Trading System) to automate parts of trading, initially for less-liquid stocks. These steps helped modernize price quotation and order matching as trading volumes grew.
The Toronto Stock Exchange moved from its earlier Bay Street headquarters into the Exchange Tower at 130 King Street West. The move reflected the Exchange’s larger scale and the growing importance of Toronto’s financial district.
The Exchange closed its trading floor and shifted to a floorless, electronic trading environment. This marked a major operational change, reducing reliance on in-person trading and increasing the role of electronic order systems.

TSX Group completed its combination with the Montréal Exchange, bringing cash equities and derivatives operations under a single corporate group. The combined organization was positioned as a more integrated Canadian exchange operator.
A consortium called Maple Group completed the acquisition of control of TMX (the TSX’s parent group), and the company was renamed TMX Group Limited. The deal marked a major ownership change, with Canadian financial institutions playing a larger role in the governance of key market infrastructure.
