The Province of Canada introduced the first Canadian coins denominated in cents in 1858 as part of a shift toward a dollar-based, decimal money system. This change supported trade and accounting by using units that lined up more closely with U.S. practice, while still operating within the British imperial monetary world.
In 1867, Confederation created the Dominion of Canada and began merging the currencies of the Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into a single Canadian dollar. This consolidation reduced currency confusion across provinces and set the stage for nationwide policy on money and reserves.
In 1868, Parliament authorized federal government paper money (“Dominion notes”) and required partial backing with gold reserves (commonly described as 20–25% against notes). This tied government note issue to gold holdings, creating a formal “gold link” even though coins and bank notes still circulated widely through private banks and cross-border trade.
In 1870, the federal government began issuing Dominion of Canada banknotes in multiple denominations. Government notes strengthened the federal role in the monetary system, while chartered banks continued to issue their own notes and manage day-to-day credit across the country.
In 1871, the federal government passed the Uniform Currency Act to complete the move to a common national currency. This helped eliminate remaining provincial differences and made Canadian money more uniform for commerce, banking, and government accounting.
By the late 1800s and early 1900s, Canada operated within an international gold-standard environment where paper money was expected to be convertible into gold, and reserve rules helped support confidence. This arrangement encouraged stable exchange rates with other gold-standard countries, but it also limited flexibility during financial stress.
In 1914, the Finance Act allowed the Department of Finance to provide Dominion notes to banks against approved collateral, acting as a temporary lender-of-last-resort (an emergency backstop when normal funding dries up). This reduced the risk of bank runs during wartime shocks and showed the need for stronger national monetary tools.
In early August 1914, as World War I began, Canada moved to stop the drain of gold by suspending practical convertibility of notes into gold. This protected reserves and allowed wartime finance to expand beyond the limits of a strict gold standard.
On July 1, 1926, Canada moved back onto the gold standard, aiming to restore prewar financial normalcy and exchange-rate stability. The return reflected the belief that gold convertibility supported confidence, even though it could constrain policy when prices and output were falling.
After the 1929 crash, financial stress and recession increased pressure on gold reserves and on the promise of convertibility. In practice, governments and banks faced growing tension between defending gold reserves and supporting employment, prices, and financial stability.
In 1931, Canada prohibited exporting gold and promoted public restraint in converting cash into gold, steps meant to protect reserves and support a fragile banking system. Although not always framed as a formal “end” to the gold standard, these measures effectively broke the day-to-day workings of gold convertibility.
On April 10, 1933, Canada definitively abolished the gold standard. Ending the formal gold link opened the way for more flexible monetary management during the Depression, but it also marked the close of the long era when gold convertibility anchored Canadian currency policy.
