After German unification, the empire moved toward a single currency. The Coinage Act created an imperial gold coinage and defined the mark as the key unit, supporting a practical move toward a gold-standard system across the new state.
A follow-up coinage law broadened the imperial currency system and reinforced gold coinage as the standard for the empire. It aimed to replace the older mix of state currencies with a unified, gold-anchored monetary framework.

France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr, Germany’s major industrial region, to secure reparation deliveries. The occupation disrupted production and trade, turning a financial dispute into a deeper economic crisis.
Germany backed “passive resistance,” encouraging noncooperation in the Ruhr while supporting workers and firms. Paying these costs largely by printing money helped drive the mark’s rapid loss of value and pushed Germany toward full hyperinflation.
Facing economic breakdown, Chancellor Gustav Stresemann ended passive resistance. The decision marked a pivot from confrontation toward stabilization and negotiation, clearing political space for monetary reform.
Germany introduced the Rentenmark to halt hyperinflation, replacing the collapsing paper mark at a conversion of 1 Rentenmark to 1 trillion old marks. Although not redeemed in gold, it was designed to restore confidence by linking value to a stable standard and limiting issuance.
An international committee led by Charles G. Dawes proposed a program connecting currency stabilization, budget balance, and a revised reparations process. The approach treated monetary stability as essential for Germany’s ability to make payments without renewed inflation.
Germany replaced the Rentenmark with the Reichsmark at par, signaling a return to a formal gold-backed framework in law and central-bank reorganization. This marked a turning point: the hyperinflation period ended, and Germany’s monetary system moved back toward stability for domestic trade and international settlement.
The Dawes Plan went into effect, reshaping how reparations were financed and supervised and supporting stabilization with foreign lending and institutional reforms. It helped close the immediate post-hyperinflation crisis and set the conditions for a more stable currency environment in the mid-1920s.
