On this date, Eli Whitney received a U.S. patent for the cotton gin, a machine that separated seeds from short-staple cotton much faster than by hand. The gin made it profitable to grow cotton across much larger inland areas of the South. That expansion tied cotton’s success to plantation agriculture and the enslaved labor system that powered it.
Congress passed the Missouri Compromise to manage growing conflict over whether new states and territories would permit slavery. It admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state while drawing a geographic line for slavery’s expansion in the Louisiana Territory. Because cotton and slavery were closely linked, these rules shaped where large-scale cotton plantations could spread politically.
The Treaty of Doak’s Stand required the Choctaw Nation to give up millions of acres in what is now Mississippi. This land transfer helped open more territory to white settlement and plantation agriculture. In the decades that followed, cotton production spread rapidly into such newly acquired lands.
The Indian Removal Act authorized the federal government to pursue the removal of Native nations from lands east of the Mississippi River. This policy shift supported rapid white settlement in the Southeast, including areas that became major cotton-growing regions. It also deepened the connection between U.S. territorial growth and the plantation economy.
U.S. officials and Choctaw leaders signed the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, which transferred a large area of Choctaw land (mainly in Mississippi) to the United States. The resulting land openings supported the broader shift of cotton plantations into the Deep South.
The financial crisis known as the Panic of 1837 struck the U.S. economy and stressed banks, merchants, and planters. Cotton was deeply tied to international trade and to borrowing, since planters often relied on credit to operate and expand. The crisis exposed how dependent parts of the Southern economy were on cotton prices and global demand.
The Kansas–Nebraska Act reorganized territories and allowed settlers to vote on slavery under “popular sovereignty.” It effectively repealed key limits established by the Missouri Compromise. The law intensified sectional conflict and made the future of slavery—and the cotton economy it supported—an even more urgent national issue.
By the mid-1800s, cotton dominated the Southern economy and had become a leading U.S. export, strengthening Southern confidence that global textile demand would protect slave-state interests. This belief was often summarized as “King Cotton.” The idea encouraged some leaders to argue that the South had economic leverage over the North and over Europe.
South Carolina Senator James Henry Hammond delivered a major pro-slavery speech that popularized the claim “Cotton is king.” He argued that cotton’s importance to the world economy gave the South strength and independence. This message helped justify continued reliance on slavery to produce cotton at scale.
After Abraham Lincoln’s election, several Southern states moved toward secession, driven partly by fears that slavery’s expansion and long-term survival were threatened. The cotton economy and enslaved labor system were central to Southern wealth and political power. Secession set the stage for war that would disrupt cotton production and trade.
Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in areas still in rebellion to be free, turning the Civil War into a war for Union and freedom. While it did not immediately end slavery everywhere, it weakened the legal foundation of slave labor in much of the Confederacy. As Union forces advanced, emancipation directly threatened the plantation workforce that had produced most American cotton.
Congress approved the Thirteenth Amendment, which would permanently end slavery in the United States once ratified by the states. This action aimed to make emancipation secure beyond wartime policy. Ending slavery dismantled the legal system that had underpinned the antebellum cotton plantation economy.
