The American Civil War (1861–1865) disrupted U.S. cotton shipments to European mills, helping create a global “cotton famine.” Brazilian cotton exports expanded sharply during this period as buyers searched for alternative supplies, drawing renewed investment toward cotton-growing areas in Brazil’s North and Northeast.
By the later 1860s, Brazil’s cotton exports were far above their pre-war average, reflecting sustained foreign demand and expanded production. This boom connected interior growing zones more tightly to export ports and merchant credit networks, but it also increased exposure to volatile world prices.
From the late 1860s into the 1870s, new cotton textile mills emerged in Brazil, including early factory development in Minas Gerais. These mills were part of a slow shift toward domestic industrial use of cotton, adding an internal market alongside exports and encouraging more regular supplies of ginned fiber.
As U.S. cotton production and exports recovered after 1865, Brazil’s cotton export boom began to cool. Exports remained significant but became more uneven, showing how Brazil’s cotton sector depended on international shocks and could lose market share when major competitors returned.
The Great Drought of 1877–1878 devastated large parts of Brazil’s Northeast, causing mass death and migration. The crisis weakened rural economies that depended on rain-fed agriculture, including cotton-growing areas, and pushed many people to leave the region in search of work.
Brazil abolished slavery with the Lei Áurea in 1888, ending a labor system that had supported many export crops. Cotton production in the Northeast increasingly relied on small and medium farmers and wage or share labor, changing how cotton was grown, financed, and marketed.
In 1889, a military coup ended Brazil’s monarchy and established the First Republic. Export agriculture remained central to national revenue, and cotton-producing states continued to press for infrastructure, credit, and policies that could strengthen their position in domestic and foreign markets.
From the late 1880s into the 1890s, cottonseed oil production expanded, with factories operating in the Northeast and a large facility opening in São Paulo in 1892. These investments mattered because they increased demand for cottonseed and encouraged more systematic ginning and industrial handling of cotton outputs.
With the opening of a railway connection in 1907, Campina Grande in Paraíba strengthened its role as a regional cotton trading and processing hub. Better transport reduced costs and delays, letting merchants move cotton more directly to export ports and helping the interior cotton economy integrate with global trade.
In the 1910s, the Companhia Industrial de Algodão e Óleos (CIDAO) launched major investments in cotton ginning across Northeastern states, supported by federal and state governments. New ginneries and an industrial complex in Recife strengthened the export supply chain by improving processing capacity and standardizing fiber for sale.
During the 1914–1918 period, Brazil’s broader industrial activity expanded, including textile manufacturing that used cotton as a key input. Rising factory demand supported cotton marketing even when export conditions shifted, tying cotton more closely to domestic industry as well as overseas buyers.
After the 1929 crash and into 1930, global commodity prices fell sharply, disrupting export-dependent economies. Cotton prices and financing tightened worldwide, making cotton exports less profitable and increasing pressure on Brazil’s cotton regions to adjust through policy changes, shifting markets, or greater reliance on domestic processing.
The Revolution of 1930 (October 3–24) overthrew Brazil’s Old Republic and brought Getúlio Vargas to power. This political turning point marked a shift toward stronger central authority and a new development approach, setting the stage for policies that increasingly favored industrialization and rebalanced how agricultural exports—including cotton—fit into the national economy.
