In the early Meiji period, Japan’s leaders treated cotton textiles as a practical starting point for industrialization. The government imported British spinning machinery and built model mills to train workers and introduce modern production methods, but the domestic raw-cotton supply was limited, pushing the industry toward imports.
Osaka Boseki (Osaka Cotton Spinning) was established as a major private venture, linked to Eiichi Shibusawa’s plan to create a competitive, modern spinning company. Its creation signaled a shift from early state-led experiments toward large, privately financed mills that could buy equipment, hire managers, and secure imported raw cotton.
Mill managers and engineers formed the Japan Cotton Spinners’ Association in Osaka to share technical knowledge and coordinate an industry still learning modern spinning. This helped spread practical information about machines, repairs, and operating methods—key steps for scaling up production and making imported cotton usable in Japanese mills.
Osaka Boseki started operations at its Sangenya plant, showing that a large mechanized mill could run successfully in Japan. As output rose, the industry’s need for reliable raw-cotton supplies became clearer, because domestic cotton could not meet the volume and quality required for modern spinning.
Executives from spinning firms helped create Japan Cotton Trading Co. (Nippon Menka) to reduce dependence on foreign merchants for raw cotton. The company began importing cotton directly and built a trading network that linked Japan’s expanding mills to overseas growers and exchanges.
Japan Cotton Trading Co. became the first Japanese company to import cotton from the United States and participate in the New York Cotton Exchange. This mattered because it widened Japan’s supply options beyond earlier sources such as India and Egypt, improving bargaining power and helping stabilize raw-material costs for spinning mills.
Japan Cotton Trading opened a Shanghai branch as Japanese yarn and cloth sales to China expanded. This strengthened Japan’s ability to source market information, manage logistics, and sell cotton textiles in what became a crucial export market for the industry’s growth.
To expand purchasing in the American South, Japan Cotton Trading established an office in Fort Worth, Texas. This move supported larger volumes of U.S. cotton imports and built closer ties to Gulf Coast shipping and American cotton exchanges, helping Japanese mills secure higher-quality fiber at scale.
Osaka Boseki and Mie Boseki merged to create Toyobo, representing a broader trend toward consolidation in cotton spinning. Larger firms could raise capital more easily, invest in equipment, and negotiate raw-cotton supplies through trading companies—changes that supported Japan’s rise as a major textile producer.
World War I disrupted European manufacturing and trade routes, opening space for Japanese cotton yarn and cloth in Asian markets. The export boom increased demand for imported raw cotton, making supply chains—from India, the United States, and other sources—more strategically important for Japan’s industry.
The Great Kantō Earthquake struck the Tokyo–Yokohama region, causing enormous destruction to buildings and factories. The disaster severely damaged part of Japan’s industrial base and reshaped economic activity during recovery, affecting demand for materials and manufacturing capacity in the 1920s.
The U.S. branch of Japan Cotton Trading moved from Fort Worth to Dallas and shortened its name to the Japan Cotton Company. The relocation reflected the scale and maturity of the U.S.–Japan cotton pipeline by the mid-1920s, with purchasing, warehousing, and exchange membership supporting large export volumes to Japanese mills.
China’s move toward tariff autonomy changed the trade environment for Japanese cotton textiles, which had relied heavily on Chinese markets. New and rising duties increased uncertainty for exporters and contributed to industry pressure to cut costs and rethink markets—linking trade policy directly to Japan’s demand for imported raw cotton.
After the 1929 financial shock, Japan’s cotton industry faced falling demand and repeated production cuts, wage reductions, and layoffs. By 1930 the slump had intensified, showing that Japan’s cotton system—built on imported raw cotton and export sales—was highly exposed to global market swings and trade barriers.
