In the 1640s, Barbados planters moved from mixed farming into large-scale sugarcane production with significant Dutch help and credit. This “sugar revolution” reshaped land use, pushed small farmers out, and made plantation agriculture the island’s economic core. It also sharply increased demand for coerced labor and set a model that spread across Britain’s Caribbean colonies.
