Indenture trial migration begins in Mauritius

In 1834, a small trial shipment of Indian workers left Calcutta for Mauritius, part of what officials later described as an experiment in “free labor.” This model—contracts tied to plantation work—was later exported to sugar colonies in the Caribbean.
