On 22 April 1500, Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet reached the Brazilian coast and claimed the land for the Portuguese Crown. This opened the way for Portugal to turn a coastal claim into a settled colony tied to Atlantic shipping routes. In the decades that followed, Portugal looked for exports that could finance long-term occupation and defense.
Beginning in 1534, Portugal divided much of coastal Brazil into hereditary captaincies, granting large strips of land to private donatários (grantees) to settle, defend, and develop. This system encouraged investment in export agriculture, including sugarcane, by tying local development to transatlantic markets. Pernambuco and São Vicente became early centers of successful colonization.
Around 1534, Engenho São Jorge dos Erasmos (Engenho dos Erasmos) was established near São Vicente as one of the early large sugar-producing operations in Portuguese America. It shows how sugar required a combined plantation-and-factory complex (an engenho), not just farming. Early mills also relied on outside capital and technical knowledge connected to Atlantic commercial hubs.
In 1535, Duarte Coelho arrived to take up the captaincy of Pernambuco and began organizing settlement along a strategic, well-watered coast. Pernambuco’s geography and port access helped sugar become the region’s leading export. This shift linked land grants, plantations, and shipping into a single Atlantic-facing economy.
In 1549, Portugal created a centralized Governorate General and sent Tomé de Sousa as the first governor-general. He built and fortified Salvador (Bahia), strengthening royal authority over the captaincies and improving coordination of defense, taxation, and trade. This stronger state presence supported expansion of export staples like sugar by making the colony easier to administer and protect.
By the mid-to-late 1500s, labor demands on sugar plantations pushed colonists toward large-scale importation of enslaved Africans, especially as disease and conflict reduced Indigenous forced labor in many areas. Enslaved labor became central to the engenho system because sugar required intensive field work and fast processing after harvest. This tied Brazil’s sugar economy directly to the broader Atlantic slave trade.
By 1612, Pernambuco had become a major sugar-exporting region, producing sugar on a scale measured in thousands of tons for Europe. Sugar estates combined agriculture, milling, and refining in one operation, demanding land, capital, and coerced labor. Brazil’s strong output helped make it the leading sugar producer in the Atlantic world during much of the seventeenth century.
In 1621, the Dutch founded the Dutch West India Company to challenge Iberian power and compete for Atlantic trade, including sugar and enslaved labor. Company planners aimed to capture key ports and plantation zones to control production and shipping. This made Portuguese Brazil’s sugar heartlands a strategic target in wartime.
On 8 May 1624, Dutch forces captured Salvador, the capital of Portuguese Brazil at the time, demonstrating the vulnerability of Atlantic sugar and shipping infrastructure. Although the Dutch did not hold the city long, the attack signaled that Brazil’s trade centers could be seized as part of larger commercial-military strategies. The episode helped set the stage for later Dutch moves against Pernambuco.
From February to March 1630, the Dutch captured Olinda and Recife in Pernambuco, the richest sugar-producing area in the world at that time. Dutch control reshaped credit, trade links, and plantation management, as the occupiers tried to keep sugar flowing to European markets. This began a long struggle that disrupted plantations and intensified warfare around the sugar zone.
In 1649, Portuguese and locally raised forces won the decisive Second Battle of Guararapes in Pernambuco. The victory weakened Dutch military momentum and helped drive a gradual rollback of Dutch positions. For the sugar economy, it marked a turning point from Dutch-controlled trade toward a reassertion of Portuguese sovereignty, even as plantations had suffered major damage.
Between 1652 and February 1654, Portuguese-led forces besieged and retook Recife, ending the main Dutch presence in Brazil. The expulsion helped restore Portuguese control over Pernambuco’s ports and many plantations, but the conflict had already disrupted production networks and financing. The struggle also pushed competitors in the Caribbean to expand sugar production, increasing long-term competition for Brazil.
On 6 August 1661, Portugal and the Dutch Republic signed the Treaty of The Hague, in which the Dutch recognized Portuguese sovereignty over Dutch Brazil (New Holland) in exchange for a large indemnity paid over time. The treaty stabilized political control over the sugar coast and reduced the immediate risk of renewed Dutch claims. It also shows how sugar-related warfare could be settled through state finance and diplomacy, not just battles.
In the 1690s, gold discoveries in Brazil triggered a rush that drew enslaved workers, owners, and investment away from coastal sugar regions. With labor scarcer and costs higher, sugar output and profitability faced new pressures, even as sugar remained a major export. This marked a major transition: Brazil’s Atlantic economy became less dominated by sugar alone and more diversified around mining revenues.
By the mid-eighteenth century, Portuguese Brazil remained deeply tied to Atlantic trade in sugar, enslaved labor, and shipping, especially from Bahia and Pernambuco. However, the colony’s political and economic center of gravity had shifted after decades of war and the growth of mining. By around 1750, sugar was still important, but it operated within a broader imperial system increasingly shaped by inland extraction and changing Atlantic competition.
