Silver ore was found at Cerro Rico, and a fast-growing mining settlement emerged at Potosí (in today’s Bolivia). This discovery became one of the largest new sources of silver in the early modern world and helped push silver into long-distance trade networks. It also set up the labor and transport systems that later moved American silver toward Europe and Asia.
Large silver deposits were discovered around Zacatecas in New Spain (today’s Mexico). Along with Andean mining, Mexican silver made Spanish America the world’s leading silver-producing region. The growing output increased the amount of silver available for taxes, coinage, and intercontinental trade.
In New Spain, the patio process began large-scale use of mercury amalgamation to extract silver from lower-grade ores. By making more ore profitable, it helped expand total silver supply and supported sustained exports. This refining shift became a key technical foundation for the later surge in Spanish American silver flows toward Asian markets.
Spain established the Manila–Acapulco galleon trade, creating a regular Pacific crossing that connected American silver to Asian commerce. Silver shipped from Mexico (and indirectly from the Andes via New Spain) was exchanged in Manila for Chinese and other Asian goods. This route became one of the main channels through which silver reached Chinese markets.
The Ming government legalized overseas trade through Yuegang (Haicheng) in Fujian, after long restrictions under the haijin (“sea ban”) system. This created a clearer legal outlet for maritime merchants who traded with Southeast Asia and the Spanish Philippines. The change helped expand the commercial pathways that brought foreign silver to China.
Viceroy Francisco de Toledo reorganized Andean colonial administration and expanded the mita, a draft labor system that supplied workers to Potosí’s mines and refining. These reforms supported higher silver production and more reliable crown revenues, but at major human cost for Indigenous communities. The larger output strengthened Spanish America’s role as the world’s main silver source feeding global trade.
A major mint was established at Potosí to turn mined silver into widely accepted coins (including the famous pieces of eight). Coining made silver easier to tax, transport, and use in international trade compared with uncoined bullion. Standardized coin helped American silver circulate through Spanish routes to Europe and via the Pacific toward China.
The Ming state standardized many taxes and labor obligations into a single payment assessed largely in silver. This policy increased the everyday need for silver in the Chinese economy, strengthening monetary demand beyond elite use. As a result, foreign silver—especially from Japan and Spanish America—became more important for meeting tax obligations and settling accounts.
Potosí’s production surged with mercury refining and large labor drafts, reaching a peak in the late 1500s. After the peak, output declined as rich surface ores were exhausted and mining required deeper, more costly work and more complex water, mercury, and labor inputs. Even as production trends shifted, accumulated silver stocks and continued exports kept the global silver trade and China’s monetary demand closely linked.
A major scandal emerged when Potosí’s mint issued large quantities of under-fineness silver coins. Because Spanish colonial coin circulated globally, doubts about quality affected trade and pricing far beyond the Andes, including in markets tied to Asian exchange. The episode shows how global commerce depended not only on silver quantity, but also on confidence in coin standards.
After consolidating power, the Qing state ended a major restriction on private overseas trade (haijin) and allowed wider maritime commerce again. This policy change supported renewed flows of goods and bullion through coastal ports and merchant networks. Over time, it helped shape how foreign silver entered China in the early Qing period.
The Qing court restricted European maritime trade to Guangzhou (Canton), tightening state oversight through licensed merchant groups and customs control. This concentrated many foreign transactions—including silver payments for Chinese exports—into one regulated setting. By the late 1700s, the system marked a stable end-state for how China managed foreign commerce during this period of global silver flows.
