The discovery of major silver deposits at Potosí (in today’s Bolivia) helped turn Spanish America into a leading source of global silver. This surge mattered because later Pacific trade would rely heavily on American silver as a payment medium in Asia. Large, steady supplies of coined silver made long-distance exchange more practical.
Miguel López de Legazpi’s expedition established a permanent Spanish foothold in the Philippines, beginning with settlement at Cebu. This created the staging point Spain needed to link Asia to New Spain (Mexico) by sea. Without a secure colonial base and port facilities, regular trans-Pacific trade could not be sustained.
Andrés de Urdaneta successfully navigated the tornaviaje (return route) from the Philippines to Acapulco by sailing north to catch favorable winds and currents. This solved the key logistical problem: ships could now make a round trip across the Pacific on a predictable schedule. The discovery effectively launched the Manila–Acapulco galleon system.
In 1571, Spain established Manila as the colonial capital, and it quickly became the main Pacific port for Spanish Asia. Manila’s location made it a meeting point where Asian merchants—especially Chinese traders—could sell goods for silver. This step concentrated the galleon trade in one heavily managed entrepôt (trade hub).
In November 1587, English privateer Thomas Cavendish captured the Manila galleon Santa Ana near the tip of Baja California. The attack showed how valuable—and vulnerable—the galleons could be when carrying high-value Asian cargo. It also helped push Spain toward stronger protections and tighter regulation of the route.
In 1593, the Spanish government restricted the Manila trade to a small number of ships and set limits on cargo. The policy responded to complaints from Spanish and American merchants that the Pacific trade distorted prices and threatened other commercial interests. These limits shaped the galleon trade into a highly controlled, monopoly-like system.
By the early 1600s, Manila relied on the real situado, a regular subsidy sent from New Spain to help fund the Philippine colonial government and defenses. This flow of silver mattered because it tied the galleon trade to public finance: silver did not only buy Asian goods, it also paid soldiers, officials, and fortifications. In effect, American silver underwrote Spain’s ability to hold the Philippines.
Over time, Acapulco became the galleon’s key American terminus, where a major commercial fair formed around the ship’s arrival. Goods from Asia—such as silk, porcelain, spices, and textiles—were sold, while Mexican silver was assembled for the return voyage. The fair linked the Pacific trade to overland routes toward Mexico City and onward to the Atlantic world.
During the War of the Spanish Succession, British privateer Woodes Rogers captured the Manila galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño off Cabo San Lucas in December 1709. The event highlighted how European wars spilled into the Pacific and threatened silver-and-goods shipments. Losses like this could shock Manila’s economy because the colony depended on the annual ship cycle.
From about 1740, Bourbon-era administrative reforms allowed more registered ships (navíos de registro) to operate in the Pacific outside the traditional galleon pattern. This change mattered because it began to erode the galleon’s tightly controlled monopoly model. Even if the galleon continued, competition and alternative legal shipping options reduced its unique role over time.
In 1762, during a wider Anglo-Spanish conflict, British naval forces captured the large Manila galleon Santísima Trinidad near the Philippines. The capture underscored how wartime naval power could disrupt the silver trade route and expose the limits of Spanish protection across vast distances. It also reinforced the trend toward seeking safer or more flexible shipping arrangements.
In 1813, the Cortes of Cádiz decreed the suppression of the subsidized Acapulco galleon, reflecting the trade’s weakening and Spain’s political turmoil. This decision signaled that the galleon system was no longer treated as essential state policy. It set the stage for the final collapse of regular Manila–Acapulco voyages.
By 1815, the last galleon voyages effectively ended the Manila–Acapulco route that had operated since 1565. The end mattered because it broke the long-running pipeline that moved American silver to Manila and Asian goods to New Spain. Afterward, Spain’s Philippine colony increasingly had to be governed and supplied through different routes and changing global trade patterns.
