On 31 July 1715, a hurricane wrecked a returning Spanish treasure fleet along Florida’s east coast, causing heavy loss of life and cargo. From 1739 to 1748, Britain and Spain fought the War of Jenkins’ Ear, with key operations focused on Caribbean trade and fortified ports. The conflict put major transshipment points under direct pressure and increased uncertainty for bullion movement. Wartime conditions helped weaken older fair-and-fleet patterns that depended on predictable, concentrated gatherings.
On 12 October 1778, Charles III issued the “Reglamento y Aranceles Reales para el Comercio Libre de España a Indias,” expanding the number of Spanish and American ports authorized for direct trade. This reform reduced reliance on a small number of tightly controlled convoy routes and the old monopoly framework. It marked a major policy shift toward more flexible, distributed Atlantic commerce.
By 1790, the long-running convoy system associated with the Spanish treasure fleets had ended, and the Casa de Contratación was abolished in a government reorganization.
