In 1738, Lewis Paul and John Wyatt patented a cotton-spinning machine using sets of rollers moving at different speeds. Although early roller-spinning ventures struggled to profit, the roller principle became a foundation for later water-powered spinning machines.
Around 1764–1765, James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny, allowing one worker to spin multiple spindles at once. It helped relieve yarn shortages but produced relatively weak thread, so it did not fully solve the need for strong warp yarn.
In 1769, Richard Arkwright patented the water frame, a spinning machine powered by water that produced stronger cotton yarn suitable for warp (the lengthwise threads). This addressed a key weakness of earlier spinning machines and encouraged larger-scale, power-driven spinning.
On 5 January 1769, James Watt received a patent for the separate condenser, a design that greatly improved steam engine fuel efficiency. More efficient steam power later made it practical to run machinery away from fast-flowing rivers, supporting factory growth.
In 1771, Arkwright developed the Cromford Mill complex as the first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill. Concentrating workers and machines in one place helped establish the factory system and became a model for later mills.
In 1775, Matthew Boulton and James Watt formed a partnership to exploit Watt’s separate-condenser patent. Their business model—building and licensing improved engines—helped spread more efficient steam power across British industry.
In 1776, some of Watt’s early large engines were completed and put to work, including major pumping engines. These early installations helped prove the reliability and fuel savings of Watt’s design, supporting wider adoption of steam power.
In 1779, Samuel Crompton produced the spinning mule, combining features of the spinning jenny and water frame. The mule made finer, more consistent yarn and scaled up spinning capacity, reinforcing Britain’s lead in cotton textiles.
In 1781, Watt patented the sun-and-planet gear, which converted a steam engine’s back-and-forth motion into continuous rotary motion. Rotary motion mattered because it could drive shafts and wheels, making steam engines better suited to powering industrial machines in mills.
In 1785, Edmund Cartwright patented a crude power loom, aiming to bring weaving into the same mechanized system as spinning. Although early versions were inefficient, the power loom set the direction for factory-based weaving and tighter integration of textile production stages.
In 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which sped up removing seeds from cotton fiber. The larger supply of American cotton that followed matched the rising capacity of British spinning and weaving, strengthening the transatlantic cotton economy that fed British mills.
By the mid-1790s, steam engines were increasingly used in cotton mills, reducing dependence on strong, steady river power. This shift supported rapid growth in urban industrial centers where labor and markets were concentrated.
In 1819, Parliament passed the Cotton Mills and Factories Act, banning employment of children under 9 in cotton mills and limiting hours for those under 16. The act was difficult to enforce, but it signaled growing public and political concern about the social costs of fast-expanding factory production.
By the 1820s, improved power looms and the availability of rotary steam power helped weaving move decisively into factories. Combined with mule spinning, this increased output and lowered costs, contributing to Britain’s widening productivity lead in textiles during the Great Divergence.
In 1825, Richard Roberts patented the self-acting (automatic) mule, reducing reliance on highly skilled manual control in spinning. This capped a long run of textile mechanization from 1760 to 1830, helping make large, steam-powered cotton mills a dominant part of Britain’s industrial economy.
